OBJECTIVES:  Students in this program work closely with the
faculty and other researchers on exciting projects in the areas of
liquid crystals, materials (biomaterials & nanomaterials) and
biological membranes. In addition to working in the lab, participants
of the REU program are also given the opportunity to take part in a
number of social events, ranging from sporting and cultural events to
canoe trips.  Research is concentrated in the following
categories: Liquid Crystals; Materials Science; Nanomaterials;
Biomaterials; and, Biomembranes.

ELIGIBILITY
Undergraduate students must be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents.

FUNDING
Students will receive a stipend of $5,000; free room and board in
the Centennial Court Dormitories for non-KSU students; and travel
assistance for non-KSU students. In addition, a child-care facility is
available on-campus. Subsistence for daycare can be provided upon

The University of Kentucky is pleased to announce our 2015 NSF-REU in Engineered Bioactive Interfaces and Devices (May 26 – July 31, 2015).

Penn State REU

The Department of Chemical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University will host a Research Experience for Undergraduates Site focused on the Integration of Biology and Materials May 26-July 31, 2015.  This REU program will provide a 10 week collaborative research experience for undergraduate students aimed at advancing the field and applications of biomolecular materials.  Projects will span a variety of topics including design of biomaterials, control of living-nonliving interfaces, and development of processes for effective recovery of biomolecules.  In addition to the hands-on research experience, students will participate in a variety of technical and social activities including seminars, facilities tours, and visits to local attractions.  Interactions with three other REU sites at Penn State and a focus on collaborative work in teams will provide social, research and personal growth opportunities beyond the research project work. Undergraduate students in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or related majors currently enrolled at US institutions are encouraged to apply.  More information regarding this REU program and an online application can be found at: http://www.che.psu.edu/reu/

Northwestern REU

Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at Northwestern University

 

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The students are paired up with some of the leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include ceramics, polymers, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, molecular electronics and biomaterials.  While there are many REU programs, the NU-MRSEC stands out in offering students an interdisciplinary research experience. Students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or engineering who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible. The program dates this year are June 22 to August 21, 2015; Applications are due Feb. 15, 2015. Participants are paid a $4500 stipend, a travel allowance, and on-campus housing is provided. Nebraska’s summer program offers research opportunities in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields in addition to an interdisciplinary Minority Health Disparities program aimed at conducting cutting edge social and behavioral research into understanding and reducing health disparities and in diversifying minority health researchers. Summer 2015 programs include:

During the Nebraska Summer Research Program, students receive first-hand exposure to research and the experience of graduate school. They work closely with faculty mentors and research teams of graduate students and other summer scholars. Students also have opportunities to participate in meaningful social and professional development activities outside of the laboratory.

 

Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority review begins Monday, February 2 and all applications must be completed by Monday, March 2. Students historically underrepresented in graduate education and students from academic institutions where research programs are limited are especially encouraged to apply.

Kansas State University is now accepting applications for the summer 2014 Research Experience for Undergraduates program May 27, 2014 – August 1, 2014.  The application deadline is February 15, 2014.

 

The Kansas State University Center for Sustainable Energy seeks applications for its summer 2014 REU program in sustainable bioenergy funded by the National Science Foundation. Students will receive $4500.00 (payable in three payments), room and board is included, plus up to $400.00 for travel allowance to K-State – total value of this 10 week research program is $7,600.00 per student.

 

Eligibility: We accept students from all science, agricultural, and engineering majors and class years. Applicants must be American citizens or permanent residents. First-generation college students, members of ethnic minority groups, females in STEM disciplines, and other under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply. No previous laboratory or research experience is required.

 

Program Overview: The research you will receive in this program under the guidance of faculty mentors will advance your state of knowledge in sustainable energy. You will participate in “hands-on” experiences with processing agricultural biomass, experiencing the physical environment of industrial-scale biomass processing with all its limitations and opportunities. Students will also meet people that actually perform the work to produce renewable energy in the communities where they live.

University of Maryland Robotics REU

We are excited to announce the 2014 NSF-sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at the Maryland Robotics Center — Research Opportunities inMiniature Robotics. We appreciate your assistance in advertising this opportunity to your undergraduate students. The application deadline is Feb 23, 2014.

Miniature robots, defined as small robots with overall sizes between 1 mm and 100 mm have the potential to significantly enable or enhance capabilities in manufacturing, medicine, reconnaissance, exploration, food safety, and search and rescue. During this 10-week summer program, students will develop their research projects, attend tutorial seminars on miniature robotics, visit local government labs involved in miniature robotics research, attend professional and academic development seminars, and tour Maryland’s top-notch facilities supporting robotics research including the UMd FabLab and Neutral Bouyancy Research Facility. The program culminates in student presentations on their summer research. Students will also have time to enjoy the Washington, DC area.

Selected participants will receive a $5,000 stipend and funding is available for on-campus housing and travel support. Housing for local students (within commuting distance of the University of Maryland) is subject to funding constraints. Students must be a US citizen or permanent resident to apply. International students are NOT eligible for this program.
