EPA Analytical Chemistry Internship

This opportunity for candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree is with the Analytical Chemistry Branch (ACB) laboratory of the Biological and Economic Analysis Division (BEAD), Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) located in Ft. Meade, Maryland (between Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD).

OPP is responsible for the registration of pesticides and must make determinations about whether pesticides pose an unreasonable risk to humans and the environment. Large amounts of data from registrants and other sources must be reviewed and reliable schedules must be maintained in order to meet statutory deadlines for both new and existing pesticides.

This research project will provide the selected candidate an opportunity to collaborate with other chemists in the laboratory and learn about the different phases of the laboratory’s projects. A list of specific research activities can be found on the internship posting.

Selected candidates will:

  • Learn about the different phases of laboratory projects from sample log in, sample preparation and analysis to data processing, review and finally reporting.
  • Conduct analyses and gain experience in using a variety of instrumentation including gas chromatography, liquid chromatography with a variety of detectors including flame ionization and mass spectrometry.
  • Gain experience in laboratory project design, planning, and analysis as well as quality assurance procedures for data generation and preparation of reports.
  • Interact directly with EPA analytical chemistry staff to understand the workings of an EPA laboratory that provides technical advice and performs pertinent studies that support program needs.

This internship begins in Summer 2021 and will initially last one year. It may be renewed up to three additional years. The position is full-time and pays a monthly stipend.

Job Opening: Lab Manager at Hampton University

Hampton University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is seeking a Lab Manager.

The position brings together managerial skills and knowledge of safety and lab procedures to ensure that laboratories operate smoothly. Responsibilities include:

  • Support and facilitate daily lab activities.
  • Managerial duties generally include preparation of labs and maintaining security of chemicals and equipment.
  • Collaborate with faculty members in designing and implementing lab activities.
  • Review building needs and act a liaison to University Building Services for upkeep and maintenance.
  • Serve as a representative to the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education Environmental Health and Safety Program Managers Committee
  • Ensuring laboratory safety in teaching and research laboratories.

A bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a laboratory-related area required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required. Applicants should also have the ability to work independently and in a team environment, ability to operate standard laboratory and office equipment, and excellent written and verbal communications skills.
