2024 FOCUS Research Symposium

This year’s annual FOCUS (Females of Chemistry Uniting Scientists) Research Symposium will be held this week: March 21 and March 22, 2024.

The symposium will include three student talks, a poster session, a career panel, and talks from two invited speakers, Dr. Angela Hight Walker from NIST and Dr. Nicole Goodwin from GSK.

Ohio State Battelle Center invites you to register and join them on Wednesday, February 28th, at 5:00 for an Exclusive Meet & Greet with DCS Corp.

Monday, 3/6 – Air & Space SCOPE Conversation, Keith Contrera, SpaceX Engineer: Keith Contrera is a lead propulsion engineer at SpaceX where he works on raptor vacuum engine nozzle extensions. He graduated from Ohio State in 2020 with his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and minor in business. During his time at Ohio State the Battelle Center for Science, Engineering, and Public Policy and the Mountaineers club. Additionally, he completed internships at Moog Inc., NASA Glenn Research Center and SpaceX. Tuesday, 3/7 – Sustainable Energy SCOPE Conversation, Jon-Paul d’Aversa: As principal and founder of UNPREDICTABLEcity, Jon-Paul d’Aversa develops strategies for long-range energy development and emissions planning. He has served as a trusted and objective resource for over 100 local governments here in Ohio, as well as the US Department of Energy, Interstate Renewable Energy Council, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the Electrification Coalition. Thursday, 3/9 – NEW Digital Technologies SCOPE Conversation, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab: Join us for a new Student Community offering around the expansion and importance of digital technologies. Our first guest speakers will be from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, Jarrett Reid and Karen Shuttleworth. Learn about the work APL does, Jarrett and Karen’s career, a discussion of the latest in Digital Engineering and suggestions on how to be better prepared to work in the field when you graduate! Salary Negotiation Workshop, hosted by FOCUS

FOCUS is hosting a Salary Negotiation Workshop in honor of Women’s History Month and Women’s Equal Pay day.

The workshop will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, March 1st from 6 – 8 pm at the Ohio Union, Round Meeting Room.

During the workshop you will learn more about:

  • The Gender Pay Gap
  • Conducting market research for target salary
  • Identifying and articulating your personal value
  • Developing your own negotiation responses and strategies

This workshop will be facilitated by Madison Eagle (eagle.41@osu.edu) in collaboration with The Center for Belonging and Social Change.
