Conversations to Remember: Virtual Volunteering Opportunity

Conversations to Remember

Conversations to Remember is a nonprofit dedicated to combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens.

This opportunity is part of their virtual visit program. This program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and volunteers could really brighten their days just by speaking with them.

The program provides training about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout their service. Students are matched based on the times they’re available, with a senior at the same time, and they have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit.

Typically…

  • students volunteer 1-2 hours per week
  • a call lasts up to 1 hour (depending on the senior’s attention span and mood on each day)

Expectations…

  • students volunteer for approximately 16 weeks

You can read more about the program on the Conversations to Remember flyer and website. Fill out the Volunteer Interest Form to discuss opportunities.

DOE & ACS Nuclear Chemistry UG Summer Schools 2023

Applications are due February 1, 2024.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) and Division of Nuclear & Technology of the American Chemical Society (ACS) are sponsoring two intensive six-week Summer Schools in Nuclear & Radiochemistry for undergraduates. Funding is provided by the US Department of Energy.

The students receive an all-expense paid opportunity to complete a 6-week summer course (June 17, 2024 – July 27, 2024) in Nuclear Chemistry and Radiochemistry in either California at San Jose State University or New York at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Selected students earn hours (tuition paid) of undergraduate chemistry credit through either San Jose State University or Stony Brook University (The State University of New York). Students will also receive a stipend of $4,000 for the 6-week program. The program will pay for student travel and housing.

The students will learn the fundamentals of nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry and their applications. A hands-on laboratory component gives the students experience in handling radioactive materials and radiation detectors. The students will meet scientists from academia and national laboratories from across the U.S. who will discuss the exciting opportunities in nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry.

Candidates should be undergraduates with an interest in nuclear science who are presently in their sophomore or junior year of study at a US college or university. They should have completed at least two years of chemistry, one year of physics, and one year of calculus. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

UPenn REU: Catalyst Research Development and Molecular Dynamics

Application Deadline: February 1, 2024

The University of Pennsylvania Department of Chemistry is accepting applications for its REU titled, “Novel Techniques and Applications in Catalyst Research Development and Molecular Dynamics” (CatResDev). This is a 10-week summer research experience.

The CatResDev REU research areas span a significant space across catalysis: method development, catalyst development, and synthetic applications, as well as extension into molecular dynamics and beyond. CatResDev exposes REU students to high throughput experimentation (HTE) techniques that are unique to Penn Chemistry and currently in high demand. Exposure to HTE provides a distinct experience for undergraduates with long-term leverage into both academic and industrial pathways.

While working on their projects, students will learn the fundamentals of success in science via training, mentoring, and industrial partnerships.  Programs focus on research safety, professional development, networking, and the opportunity to learn from one another and leading experts in the field.

More information is available on the program website.

ASC Launch Your Career: Science and Research Resume Review

Tomorrow, January 17, from 5:30pm-7:00pm, ASC Career Success is hosting a science and research-focused resume review. The goal of this event is to help science-focused students interested in pursuing careers in environmental science, sustainability, biotechnology, and manufacturing, better craft and tailor their resumes with real-time industry feedback.

At this in-person workshop, students can expect an interactive experience to learn more about what to put on their resumes, especially as it pertains to more technical fields in Science and Research. This is a great opportunity for students to perfect their resumes before the Spring Career Fair on January 23!

Representatives from the Ohio EPA, Andelyn Biosciences, and Proctor & Gamble (P&G) will assist in reviewing student resumes before the career fair, allowing you to get direct feedback on crafting a successful resume for science and research-focused fields. Some employers may also offer on-site interviews following the event. To prepare for this opportunity, students should bring a copy of their resume that they can edit or make changes to. Students can expect some one-on-one career coaching and consultation for improvements to their documents and materials.

Spots are limited, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible. All ASC undergraduate and graduate students, exploration students, and recent alumni are invited to attend. Please check Handshake for the most up-to-date event information.
