2022 DOE Scholars Program

The U.S. Department of Energy Scholars Program is accepting applications for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates interested energy, science and technology, and environmental development.

This opportunity will allow you to work and learn alongside the DOE to support their mission’s in areas such as:

  • Energy and Nuclear Security
  • Environmental Responsibility
  • Cyber Security
  • Department Operations and Management
  • Technologic Advancements

This program offers a stipend, travel reimbursement, direct involvement in DOE research, and professional development opportunities.

Minor Spotlight: Communication Minor

The ability to communicate effectively is an essential skill in today’s society. The Communication minor equips students with this essential skill that employers most desire. Students learn how to communicate effectively to form relationships and influence others, and how to use mass communication and communication technologies to craft messages that improve our work and civic life. Students also learn how advertising can be used strategically to create the most positive impact.

There is one prerequisite course and 4 required minor courses.  All are available online, 100% at a distance, each and every semester including Summer term.  None of the courses have prerequisite requirements and all could be taken concurrently if desired.

Students do not need to meet with a School of Communication advisor to declare the minor.  Interested students just need to plan to complete the required courses and their major advisor can declare the minor.  Any deviations or proposed course substitutions to the minor requirements must be approved by petition to the Chair of the Undergraduate Program Committee in the School of Communication.  Substitution requests can be submitted via email to butte.1@osu.edu.

There are also five more-specific Communication minors, including the Health, Environment, Risk, & Science Communication Minor, which may be of interest to CBC students.

Become a 2021-2022 ACS Bridge Fellow

The Ohio State University is proud to be an American Chemical Society Bridge Site! The American Chemical Society is accepting applications for 2021-2022 ACS Bridge Fellows.

The ACS Bridge Program (ACS-BP) was developed to increase the number of students from underrepresented (UR) racial and ethnic groups obtaining a Ph.D. in the chemical sciences. ACS-BP assists UR students with getting into and succeeding in graduate school.

As an ACS Bridge Fellow, students enroll in a one- to two-year Bridge Experience that provides research experience, advanced coursework, mentoring, and coaching to prepare a graduate school application.

Students who have not applied to graduate school, or who have applied but were not accepted, may be offered:

  • A free common application that will be shared with participating departments
  • Resources to strengthen applications
  • Connections to faculty and mentors
  • Networking opportunities with other ACS-BP students

Student Experience and Engagement Delegates (SEEDs) Program

You can help drive change, share your feedback and ideas as we create an extraordinary experience at Ohio State by applying for the Student Experience and Engagement Delegates (SEEDs) program.

Led by Dr. Melissa Shivers, Senior Vice President for Student Life, the program serves as a way for the university to gather feedback and ideas from as many students as possible. All undergraduate, graduate and professional students from any campus are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted Sunday, February 21 – Sunday, March 21.

Selected SEEDs members will commit to:

  • Attending monthly meetings with Melissa Shivers, Student Life leaders, student government leaders, university guests and other students
  • Providing feedback about a variety of topics including, but not limited to, campus policies, climate, engagement, barriers and support that is crucial to student success
  • Offering solution-oriented ideas that will advance the Ohio State student experience
  • Engaging as an active participant in special events, initiatives and potential recruitment of prospective students

Charles River Labs seeking Interns and Full-Time Employees

Charles River Labs (CRL) has a high need to hire full-time, entry-level positions in Ashland, OH. These positions focus on drug discovery/development in pre-clinical laboratory setting. You can view the openings here.

These are full-time positions that require full-time paid training followed by mentorship program. First year new hires receive 15 days of vacation, accrued plus accrued sick time. Nuclear & Radiochemistry Undergraduate Summer School

The U.S. Department of Energy and the American Chemical Society, Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology, sponsor an INTENSIVE 6-week course (June 14, 2021 – July 23, 2021) in Nuclear and Radiochemistry for undergraduates held in San Jose, CA or Long Island, NY with 12 students each.

The course consists of lectures on the fundamentals of nuclear science, radiochemistry, and their applications in related fields. Laboratory work introduces state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation used in basic and applied nuclear science. Also included are a Guest Lecture Series and tours of nearby research centers at universities, National Laboratories, and other nuclear facilities. Students meet and interact with prominent faculty and scientists who are working in nuclear and radiochemistry, nuclear medicine, nuclear forensics, and related fields.

Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy. Provided are a stipend of $4000, all tuition and fees, housing, transportation to and from the Summer School location, books, and laboratory supplies. Transferable college credit is awarded through the ACS accredited chemistry programs at San Jose State University (7 units) or the State University of New York at Stony Brook (6 units).

2021 International Research Experiences for Students Program

The American Chemical Society is currently accepting applications for the 2021 International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program. This program is seeking applicants who are interested in exploring chemistry and chemical engineering research in an international setting. ACS is working with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to place U.S. students at German research labs from May-August 2021.

If selected, you will receive:

  • a generous stipend
  • a housing allowance
  • round trip airfare
  • health insurance while abroad
  • financial support to attend the 2021 DAAD Heidelberg Forum and the 2022 ACS Spring Meeting
