Truman Scholarship Information Session

The Truman Scholarship is a prestigious award that recognizes outstanding third-year students in preparation for careers in public service. The scholarship contributes up to $30,000 towards future graduate education and offers opportunities for professional and leadership development.

On Wednesday, October 18 at 2 pm via Zoom, the Undergraduate Fellowship Office is holding an information session and workshop for the Truman Scholarship for undergraduate students in their junior year. They’ll discuss the objectives of the award, eligibility requirements, and application process. Participants will also engage in guided brainstorming processes to generate content for their application essays.

Scholarship & Training Opportunity: MARC T34 at OSU

This is Ohio State’s first T34 grant for Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The mission of the “Molecules to Society” MARC T34 at Ohio State is to increase diversity in the next generation of biomedical scholars doing impactful research. This will be accomplished by providing undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups with a research-focused training program that includes courses, experiential learning, faculty and graduate student mentoring, and peer-support.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Rising junior in Autumn 2023
  • Chemistry, engineering, public health, biomedical sciences, or STEM majors
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Research-oriented and interested in research-focused higher degree program (PhD or MD/PhD)
  • Previous research experience is NOT required
  • One essay to address your interest in being a MARC scholar
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation (At least one letter from an academic reference)
  • Resume or curriculum vitae (CV)

FBI Visiting Scientist Program: Counterterrorism and Forensic Science

FBI logoThe ORISE Visiting Scientist Program (VSP) is an educational and training program designed to connect participants with unique resources at the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) laboratory.

The FBI Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit (CFSRU) provides technical leadership for the FBI as well as for other law enforcement and intelligence agencies through applied research and development.

What will I be doing? As a participant with the CFSRU VSP, you will have an opportunity to enhance your professional development and increase your research capabilities and contributions by participating in forensic research initiatives utilizing state-of-the-art equipment under the mentorship of CFSRU scientists. The VSP will expose you to a research environment in a high security government facility and provides an opportunity to perform research in areas of interest unique to law enforcement and national security.

Where will I be located? Quantico, Virginia

Why should I apply?  Under the guidance of a mentor, you will perform sophisticated laboratory techniques using emerging technologies, judge the completeness and accuracy of research results, perform statistical analyses on data, and prepare written manuscripts for FBI review and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The benefits include a competitive stipend and relocation up to $1,000. You will receive a travel allowance of $5,000 per appointment year to cover travel-related expenses to scientific and professional development activities. The initial appointment can be up to one year but may be renewed upon recommendation of FBI contingent on the availability of funds. The appointment can be made on a full-time or part-time basis.

Am I eligible? Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen and have completed requirements for a Bachelor’s, Master, or PhD or complete all the requirements for the degree by the anticipated start date of the appointment.

The Ohio State University Professional Exploration Program (PXP)

The Ohio State University Professional Exploration Program (PXP) provides an opportunity for underrepresented undergraduates who are interested in a health professional career, but have not decided on a career path, to explore careers in seven different health professional schools. Participants will explore career opportunities with the following OSU professional schools:

  • College of Dentistry
  • College of Nursing
  • College of Optometry
  • College of Pharmacy
  • College of Public Health
  • College of Veterinary Medicine
  • School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences

This year’s PXP program, set for August 2023 through February 2024, will provide an in-depth look at career options in the various health fields on designated Saturdays. The programming will be determined by each hosting college/unit and will be scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. but may vary.

This is a competitive program with a limited number of spaces, so be sure to apply soon!

Applications are due by Friday, June 30, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. 

All students will receive application results by Friday, July 14, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. and will need to accept their admission into the program by Friday, July 28, 2023, 11:59 p.m.

Info Sessions: Fulbright and Knight Hennessy Fellowships

The Undergraduate Fellowship Office has reached out to CBC about the following two information sessions:

1. Fulbright U.S. Student Program

Please join Fulbright U.S. Student Program staff from the Institute of International Education (IIE) and Fulbright Alumni Ambassadors for a virtual information session. Learn about Fulbright opportunities for U.S. citizens to go abroad to pursue graduate or professional study, conduct research, or teach English. During the session, you will find out about the types of Fulbright awards, application components, tips, and have an opportunity to ask questions. Following the program overview, attendees will enter a breakout room with Ohio State Fulbright advisors in the Undergraduate Fellowship Office and Office of International Affairs to learn more about applying through their institution. Undergraduate students from any discipline are welcome to attend.

The Fulbright information session will take place Tuesday, April 4th from 6-7 pm on Zoom. Register for this virtual information session. 

This event is co-hosted by Fulbright, the Office of International Affairs, and the Undergraduate Fellowship Office. Look out for more Fulbright information and events during Fulbright Week April 10-14.

2. Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program

Join us to hear from an Admission Officer about Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University, a multidisciplinary, multicultural graduate scholarship program. Each Knight-Hennessy scholar receives up to three years of financial support to pursue graduate studies in any of Stanford’s seven schools. Scholars form a supportive community with one another while engaging in experiences that prepare them to be visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders who address complex challenges facing the world.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars in-person information session will take place Tuesday, April 4 from 1-2 pm in Jennings Hall, Rm 040. Register for this in-person information session.

DOE & ACS Nuclear Chemistry UG Summer Schools 2023

The US Department of Energy (DOE) and Division of Nuclear & Technology of the American Chemical Society (ACS) are sponsoring two intensive six-week Summer Schools in Nuclear & Radiochemistry for undergraduates. Funding is provided by the US Department of Energy.

The students receive an all-expense paid opportunity to complete a 6-week summer course (June 12, 2023 – July 21, 2023) in Nuclear Chemistry and Radiochemistry in either California at San Jose State University or New York at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Students also earn hours (tuition paid) of undergraduate chemistry credit through either San Jose State University or Stony Brook University (The State University of New York). Selected students also receive a stipend of $4,000 for the 6-week program.

Candidates should be undergraduates with an interest in nuclear science who are presently in their sophomore or junior year of study at a US college or university. They should have completed at least two years of chemistry, one year of physics, and one year of calculus.

Applications are due by February 15, 2023.

2023 NIIMBL eXperience

The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) is working to enable more efficient and flexible manufacturing capabilities for existing and emerging biopharmaceutical products, and develop a world-leading biopharmaceutical manufacturing workforce.

The NIIMBL eXperience is an exclusive in-person, all expenses paid immersion program that offers you real-world insight into biopharmaceutical industry careers through hands-on activities and direct interactions with industry professionals. The program also aims to catalyze professional growth among participating students, through personal brand development, networking, and mentoring experiences.

The program targets African American/Black, Latinx, and Native American students completing their freshman or sophomore year of college. It is open to students enrolled in any STEM-based major living in the United States.

In 2023, three unique NIIMBL eXperience programs will be offered:

Each program will last ~a week during the summer of 2023. The deadline to apply for each program is January 20, 2023.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

The OSU Undergraduate Fellowship Office would like to work with CBC students on the Fulbright United Kingdom Summer Institutes fellowship.

Fulbright United Kingdom Summer Institutes offer funded opportunities to study abroad for 3-4 weeks during the summer. This program is for first- and second-year undergraduate students, and it prioritizes students with little-to-no travel experience outside of North America and students with limited financial means. The application deadline is February 7, 2023.

Virtual Career Fair for internships and fellowships with DoD

Join the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) on January 18, 2023, from 12 to 3 p.m. ET for a virtual career fair highlighting STEM internship and fellowship opportunities for college students and postgraduates at U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) research facilities around the country!

During the fair, attendees will have the chance to:

  • Explore paid internships and fellowships with DoD research facilities
  • Learn about DoD host facilities that host ORISE participants
  • Connect with ORISE program staff in 1-on-1 chats

Keynote Presentation: Dr. Victor Convertino, senior scientist with the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, will give a live presentation at the event. His talk is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. ET.

DAAD Rise Germany Internships

The OSU Undergraduate Fellowship Office would like to help CBC students with the DAAD-RISE program.

RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) Germany offers an incredible opportunity for sophomores and juniors to participate in a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions.

What is the DAAD-RISE program?

Students are matched with a German host university or institute according to their area of interest (chemistry, biology, etc). DAAD provides students a monthly stipend for three months to help cover living expenses. Host universities, universities of applied sciences (UAS), and institutes provide housing assistance. UAS will also match students with Ph.D. student mentors or researchers. Knowledge of German language is NOT REQUIRED. The working language will be English.

Who is eligible?

Undergraduate students who:

  • are currently enrolled in biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth sciences, or engineering (or a closely related field)
  • have completed at least 2 years of a undergraduate degree program by the time of the internship placement
  • can prove that they will maintain undergraduate status after the internship has taken place

Because of these eligibility requirements, usually current sophomores and juniors apply.
