OPC Polymers Job Opening

OPC Polymers, a local coatings manufacturer, is growing and looking to add to its team! They are seeking to hire an entry level Polymer Chemist to join their Resin R&D Lab.

This is an entry-level opportunity to learn the techniques used in the process, design, and manufacture of the various types of polymers used in the coatings industry. The candidate will learn the proper assembly of reaction equipment, processing techniques, and standard quality test procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry
  • Experience working with coating and/or polymers preferred
  • Ability to lift up to 35lbs on occasion
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Chemist Specialist Position

First Solar in Perrysburg, OH is looking to hire a full-time Chemist Specialist I to their team. First Solar is one of the leading global manufacturers and providers of comprehensive photovoltaic (PV) systems using advanced thin module and system technology, and has developed, financed, engineered, and operated some of the world’s largest and most successful PV power plants in existence.

The Chemist Specialist I position is responsible for conducting routine analysis following defined methods in support of recycling, wastewater, raw material production, procurement, and refinement.

Some Requirements include:

  • At least 3 years experience in an analytical lab environment/academic equivalent
  • Experience involving polymer analysis, thermal analysis, and wet chemistry preferred
  • Associate’s Degree in Chemistry or related field required, BA or BS in Chemistry or related field preferred
  • General knowledge in laboratory procedures (prepare samples, perform analyses, handle toxic/flammable materials, etc.)

The James Cancer Hospital is currently accepting student volunteer applications for the 2019 summer semester! Interview invitations will be sent shortly after the application window closes, in which students will need to provide a letter of recommendation and a copy of their resume. Interviews will be held on April 12th, 2019. Students must be available from May 8th, 2019 to July 26th, 2019 and will volunteer regularly each week, most shifts being 2 hours in length.

Volunteer assignments are base on availability and include:

  • Way finding/escorting
  • Surgery family waiting area
  • Emergency Department
  • Patient care floors
  • Outpatient oncology clinics

Alaskan Summer Internship Program

Applications are due April 1, 2019, 5:00 PM EST

Looking for an internship away from home? The U.S. Department of Energy in sponsoring the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Research Participation Program for the Summer 2019 Term. Upper-level undergraduates (junior/senior) and Master graduate students pursuing a degree or recent graduates with a degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics discipline are encouraged to apply. The internship program will last 10 weeks during the summer, and selected interns will receive a stipend starting at $600/week.

Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Application Deadline: February 8th, 2019

The Center for Selective C-H Functionalization (CCHF) is currently accepting applications for their Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program (CSURP) for 2019. The program provides an opportunity for undergraduate students with an interest in the chemical sciences to conduct research with a faculty mentor in one of CCHF’s 15 partnership research laboratories across the country.

The program highlights:

  • Engage in innovative, cutting edge research
  • Interact with prominent leaders in the field
  • Receive a competitive stipend (up to $5000)
  • Receive campus housing or a housing allowance
  • Attend seminars, workshops, career planning sessions, and other professional development opportunities

The program runs from mid-May to mid-August. 

You’re encouraged to apply if you are:

  • Currently enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate at a U.S. institution of higher education
  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • In good academic standing
  • Someone with interest in the field of C-H Functionalization (No previous research experience is required!)
  • Someone with interest in synthetic organic chemistry
  • A chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering major

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program (MLEF) offers the opportunity for students to develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy. This program spans over 10 weeks during the summer, and focuses on the success of women and minorities in the STEM fields. (However, all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply!)

The program has many different locations for placement, including:

  • National Energy Technology Laboratory, Pittsburgh, PA; Morgantown, WV; Albany, OR

We interrupt our regular blog programming to share this exciting info: the thrift store on campus, Buckeye Bargains, is extending its hours for the holiday season!

Buckeye Bargains sells a multitude of items including apparel, appliances, OSU merchandise, and other goods for marked down prices. Proceeds go to benefit the University Women’s Club Scholarship Fund. They are located in the Lower Level of Converse Hall, 2121 Tuttle Park Place (ROTC Building) and will be extending their hours for the shopping season!

They will be open:

Wednesdays: 11/28, 12/5, 12/12 from 9AM to 6PM

Saturday: 12/1 from 9AM to 1PM

Drs. James and Wanda Trefil Science Scholarship

The Kościuszko Foundation grants a $5,000 scholarship each year for undergraduate students of Polish descent. The scholarship is under Drs. James and Wanda Trefil, both dedicated educators who are passionate in helping outstanding students achieve their academic goals.

Requirements of the “Drs. James and Wanda Trefil Science Scholarship” include:

  • Undergraduate student of Polish descent, US citizen or permanent resident
  • Outstanding promise in the natural sciences
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA
