How to Make an Emoji in Photoshop!

For my midterm Tutorial project regarding identity, I decided to create an emoji from scratch! What better way to show how you feel about yourself and who you are and how you present yourself than with an emoticon that we all have come to know and love? Although my tutorial goes through the steps on producing a certain face, the emoji can be easily manipulated by changing the shape of the eyes, the color of the face, the shape of the mouth, and many other ways to adapt to what the desired outcome of the artist is. Maybe it depends on the day!

I also chose this project because it can be easily completed and is fun to do so as you watch the face form a little bit more with each step. I feel like this can relate to our identity as humans and how each of us are a big puzzle with many pieces that are added together each and every day as we grow up.

Face Swap #2

This is a face swap of my own face onto Julianne Hough’s body. I found this picture of Julianne Hough on the internet. I chose this one because I feel that the background describes some of the qualities of Julianne Hough that I admire her for. I have been watching her act in movies since I was younger and I have always enjoyed her bright personality. I also follow her on social media and love the inspiring and uplifting things she posts.

The chromatic qualities of the background image help to portray these bubbly, joyful traits. The white line around her body creates a stark contrast to emphasize her body as separate from the background. In photoshop, I used many tools to seamlessly blend the 2 images together. By first cropping out my face and pasting it on to her face, I was able to reorient the images to lay perfectly in position with each other. I also used the blur tool, layer masks, and then finally the clone stamp tool to blend the images to one skin color.

How to Easily Swap Faces in Photoshop

This is the link to the tutorial that I followed to complete my face swap. Tutorials are especially helpful because they provide detailed, step-by-step procedures on how to complete a task. The best tutorials include images or videos along with written steps. Some could even include troubleshooting tips. The tutorial that I used was extremely helpful because it included screenshots with arrows guiding me to complete the correct steps. The steps to complete a face swap can be easily broken down and explained in detail. But, depending on the images that one uses for the face swap, you may have to create your own buffer steps to seamlessly blend the images.

Elements and Principles of Art

Line: the path of a moving point

 Color: chromatic quality

 Value: brightness versus darkness

 Form: 3D object having depth

Texture: tactile quart of a surface

Negative Space: the objects external / internal areas, everything but the object

 Contrast: juxtaposition that accentuates difference

 Emphasis: accentuation of importance

Movement: directed path of optical motion, or the path that your eye takes

 Pattern: repetition of visual elements

Proportion: a scaling of objects in relation to each other

Alignment / Repetition: object repeated for emphasis

Unity: harmonious arrangement of visual elements

Identity Self-Portrait

My completed self portrait describes me in a unique and original way. There are many of the elements and principles of art that are incorporated that facilitate the illustration of myself through a ferris wheel, fireworks and other bright lights. Probably the most obvious of these principles is the emphasis on the ferris wheel, the brightest image in the piece of art. For me, this ferris wheel represents my goal to be a light for others, which I plan to do through becoming an Occupational Therapist. The use of the element of value, or adjusting the brightness/darkness of objects, more specifically through the reflections in the water of each of the images, helps to further emphasize the main images. I also incorporated balance and unity in my work to show the importance of these 2 pieces in my life. The ferris wheel is the center of the work and everything encircles it to emphasize its importance. In addition, the ferris wheel is the largest image in the art and its proportion to the other images reveals my priorities in an interesting way. I used images of fireworks because this is an original picture that I took once at a concert, helping to reveal a hobby of mine. Overall, the use of these elements and principles in this art illustrate myself in a way that I have never produced before.

Letter to Stephanie

Dear Stephanie…

My name is Cassie Loew and I am from Cincinnati, Ohio. I am a first year majoring in Health and Rehabilitative Sciences to hopefully become a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. My artistic background is not very deep. I took the required courses in Elementary and High School but my artwork never really stood out. I enjoyed the the classes and the art-making process but it is not something that I pursued after I completed the required courses. From this course I am hoping to gain a better understanding of the computer art software. Additionally, I am excited to work with the middle school students and create art with them. I hope this helps expose me to the types of children I am hoping to work with in the future. Some of the concerns I have coming in to this course is that I will be frustrated with the software in the beginning while I try to learn how to use it. Also, I am curious to see how the middle schoolers interact with my classmates and I. To me, digital art is any type of art that, instead of being made by hand on a canvas or paper, is made using computer software. Art is important to me because I believe it is the epitome of a representation of one’s creative side. It is important to schools because it highlights all the different types of people and cultures around us. Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. But to me, empathy is a human’s ability to feel compassion and have a desire to help another. Empathy is an important topic for school aged children to explore because it reveals to them the many emotions that others feel and the importance of being there for others. And in the same way, learning empathy shows a student that there are other people to help them and share their feelings with them as well. Overall, I am very excited to see what doors this class opens for me. I am looking forward to learning more about Digital Art and the middle school students.
