Things I’ve Learned About Online Learning

Here at Ohio State University I have a very busy schedule so trying to fit in all my classes is a very hard task. That being said I have been forced to take many online classes. I haven’t always been the best student in my online courses, I find them to be a lot harder then attending in-person classes. For that reason I decided to utilize a class offered by Ohio State that goes over the strategies of learning effectively while taking an online course. The main thing I realized Taking this course  is that online courses are not an easier way to learn, but  a more convenient one.  To successfully learn online, I learned that i needed to dedicate a significant amount of my time to focus on the course by itself. I also learned the many different tools that online classes may require you to use to meet in a virtual classroom. Leading from that one of the main keys taking a online class is getting to a point where you become tech savvy.

A huge point in learning online is making sure you have reliable internet and computer access. if these things aerent reliable it can cause some huge issues in your attempt to learn. Technology glitches happen all the time. To avoid disasters, we learned of the many storage and backup applications we can use to make sure our work is never lost such as Dropbox or Google Documents. Personally i think google docs is my favorite service to keep track off all my work. This website goes over some tips and tricks that go beyond what meets the eye in the utilization of google docs.

I also learned it’s crucial to complete assignments before the due date, incase of any technology issues you have enough time to communicate with the professor or someone from the IT department of a certain technology or application.

Overall i learned many things to ensure that whatever online learning environment i’m in I will have the tools and skills needed to succeed.

New Technology to Help Learn

Technology is becoming an important part on how we learn today, especially if you are taking a online class. I’ve learned many new technologies from the class that have the potential to change the way i learn not only online but in a traditional classroom setting. One of the most notable applications/technologies that i was introduced to was Trello. Trello is a task management app that gives you a visual overview of what is being worked on and who is working on it.The best way i can describe it is a virtual whiteboard filled with post-it notes. It’s a great way to keep your weekly tasks managed on a platform that can be accessed through any of your technologies such as your phone, tablet or laptop.

Another technology i learned to utilize through this course is Evernote. Evernote is an app designed for note taking, organizing, task management, and archiving. The app allows users to create notes, which can be text, drawings, photographs, or saved web content. Since most OSU students have iPads its very useful to be able to take notes with the apple pencil the school provides. With the application users can display slide shows, pictures, graphs, etc, and then they are able to take notes on whatever type of media displayed through Evernote.

Online learning Success

In order to be a successful online learner you have to stay committed to the core values of staying focused and on top of your work. An important thing right of the back is maintaining a strict schedule of when you will study or complete assignments for the online course. Even though you’re not required to attend classes, you still need to keep up with the course material on your own time. That being said I believe the most important tool to be successful in an online course is self-discipline. Its crucial to set a time each week to log onto the class and study materials/complete assignments. Another thing that is important when taking a class in an online setting is staying motivated. It’s recommended to use motivation tricks. Personally I study with my favorite music or I create plans for when i’m done studying to keep me motivated to get my work done. Something else thats useful is to print off slideshows or readings so you don’t have to look at a computer for an extended time. It’s also crucial to test yourself on the material even if practice tests aren’t provided through the course. One of the worst things you can do when taking an online course is trying to multi-task. If you are constantly switching back on forth doing one thing or another the information mostly likely wont be retained as well if you are solely focusing on the subject at hand. An important tool i’d recommend to be successful  online is to make friends in the same course. Its always good to have a second opinion on the material. If you are attending the same university you can even meet up and study together or go over stuff thats challenging in the course. Overall as long as you’re a committed and motivated learner you can succeed.
