My nursing and clinical research teaching career has primarily been using distance-based educational platforms.  Teaching adult learners in graduate school settings or in professional training educational groups requires an understanding of adult learners and in educational information technology platforms.  The methods I use follow the pedagogy of online teaching illustrated by Redmond & Lock, 2006 below:

My work in exploring the learning needs of clinical research coordinators has informed the development of several courses and curricula including:

  • UAB Clinical Research Symposia Curriculum- 1998-1999
  • HPTN Clinical Research Fogarty Course (3 hrs) UAB
  • ICER Clinical Research Fogarty Courses (5 courses) UAB
  • PERC Clinical Research Fogarty Courses (5 Courses) UAB
  • UAB SON- MSN & Academic Certificate in Clinical Research (5 courses)- UAB
  • OSU CON- MACPR CRM/RA Courses (6 + courses)- OSU

I have used Webex, Blackboard Vista, Blackboard Learn, Canvas and Desire2Learn (Carmen) as online learning platforms.  Collaborations with clinical research experts and international students have offered opportunities to journey through learning as facilitator and mentor, especially in the development of publications.  I have facilitated the publication of 10 publications of international students, and several publications from students in my academic courses at UAB.

I also serve as a consultant on clinical research training for the NCATs Phase II ECRPTQ Supplement Grant, with University of Michigan, Tufts University and Rochester University, bringing core competency and clinical research coordinator training expertise in the development of an upcoming grant proposal for NCATS/NIH.

I’ve been experimenting with the use of WordPress and Portfolium for MACPR student and clinical research professional ePortfolios.  This is one example of that work.  The MACPR Templates for ePortfolio can be found at:
