A little bit about me!

I have nearly 30 years of experience working in clinical research as a coordinator, administrator, clinical nurse leader, academic, and educational specialist.  After my initial work as a nurse in critical care, I moved into my clinical research career with a concentration on cardiovascular and infectious disease studies.  I worked in a variety of capacities, including Administrator of the NIAID Mycoses Study Group Coordinating Center, located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).  I also was Director of Research for a large private-practice cardiovascular group managing a staff and a wide-variety of inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular clinical trials of drugs and devices.  I also developed and taught distance-accessible courses in clinical research starting in 2005 at UAB, including a 2-year, NIH Fogarty Challenge Grant “Promoting Enhanced Research Capacity for Global Health” (PERC) which was offered to over 150 coordinators in 39 low-resource countries, in addition to academic teaching at UAB School of Nursing.

I have a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from UAB School of Nursing with a concentration on clinical research role delineation and a MSPH from UAB School of Public Health with a major in Epidemiology.  I continue to stay on the pulse of clinical research through my affiliation with the Mycoses Study Group Education and Research Consortium (www.msgerc.org) and my leadership in clinical research professional organizations.  After serving two terms as President of the Consortium of Academic Programs in Clinical Research (www.coapcr.org), I am now serving as Immediate Past-President where we are continuing our work on promoting core competencies of clinical research professionals world-wide and achieving accreditation pathways for programs offering degrees in clinical research via our association with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).  I’m also highly involved in the International Association of Clinical Research Nurses (www.iacrn.org), serving with the Research and Scope and Standards Committees; Association of Clinical Research Professionals (www.acrpnet.org), Drug Information Association (www.diahome.org) and Society of Clinical Research Associates (www.socra.org).  I have published widely on subjects related to clinical research management, especially my research on educational issues and role delineation in clinical research.

A key contribution that I have made is in clinical research workforce development, not only as an educator, but through my leadership roles with the Joint Taskforce for Clinical Research Core Competencies and defining core competencies which are being adopted world wide.

I continue to reside in Birmingham, Alabama.
