Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

One of the main reasons I decided to attend the Ohio State University was the immense opportunities it offers for Global Awareness. During the next four years, I have a personal goal to learn as much as possible about the world around me. One way I am currently achieving this goal is by attending a service learning experience in Mexico. In Mexico, I will help to build homes in Tijuana while simultaneously learning about immigrant economics. As immigration has been a hot topic for a while now, I think the topic of the trip is very appropriate. It is my hope that this trip not only helps me gain compassion for the plight of immigrants but also teaches me more about how immigration affects my course of study, economics.

Another thing I love about Ohio State is the opportunities it offers to make my education uniquely my own. Original inquiry is a great way for me to differentiate myself and learn about topics for which I have a true interest. I am looking to participate in research surrounding underground economics and white collar crime. I am prepared to take extra course work in these areas, and I also am planning to spend a year in London in order to achieve a more global perspective on the topic.

I am happy to say that my major, economics, is in an area that I find fascinating. And, as a result, I feel compelled to take challenging coursework so I can learn as much as possible in the short four years I have. I plan to go above and beyond my GE requirements by taking extra courses in sociology and psychology to further understand the thoughts behind consumer decisions. Since my main area of interest is underground economies and white collar crime, I am very excited to take courses delving into criminal psychology. I also plan to take a couple extra major courses in economics to give myself a fuller perspective.

Leadership development is also very important to me. I am currently a member of the First Year Leadership Initiate (FYLI) at OSU, and plan to apply to be a leader within the organization next year. Aside from FYLI, I am looking for internships and service opportunities that will sharpen my leadership skills.

One example of my leadership development is my work with Generation Akron, which ties in with service development. I have been going on week-long summer mission trips with Generation Akron for the part two years, and by the time I earn my degree, I am hoping to lead my own. During these trips, I have worked with underprivileged populations serving food and helping with child service while learning about the city we are helping. The trips have been an enormous catalyst for my own personal growth, and I plan to remain a part of the organization throughout my college experience.
