Global Awareness:

This summer I traveled to Europe for two weeks. While touring Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England I began to discover how different their culture and traditions are even though they are English-speaking countries. I learned about their political and social views and values as well as the hot topics that are in debate in their country right now. Strangely enough, disagreement over immigration policy is a huge problem in the U.K. right now just like it is in the United States. I happened to be in London for the EU referendum vote and I personally experienced the social climate before and after the vote. Londoners were devastated following the results of the vote to exit the European Union, and to top it all off, I watched the Prime Minister resign on live television that morning. It was a crazy time to be in London and a very memorable moment in history that I got to experience firsthand.

My goal as an OSU student is to do everything I can to experience more cultures and gain a better understanding of the world through experiences like this one. The best way to do this as a student is through studying abroad, but it isn’t cheap. I plan to seek out financial aid as well as scholarships and grants to help fund my study abroad excursions and ultimately enrich my education experience at OSU and my overall knowledge as an individual.

Artifacts

ByFusion Research

ByFusion is a relatively new company that is working to provide a viable and efficient source of clean building materials. Their material called, “Replast”, is composed of 100% recycled plastic from the ocean. Their manufacturing process is almost 100% waste free and carbon-neutral. We researched the possibility of this becoming common practice in the construction of new buildings and projects in the future. If the company teamed up with another company that is successfully collecting copious amounts of plastic pollution from the ocean patches like Boyan Slat’s Ocean Array Project, they could make this small startup company the next standard in building materials because it would be more efficient, effective, and environmentally friendly than any other material. Check out these two incredibly innovative companies and what they are doing.

About Me

Processed with VSCOcam with b5 preset

My name is Veronica “Ronnie” Carlson. I am a first-year student from Dunedin, Florida, majoring in Arts Management and minoring in both Vocal Music and Music, Media, and Enterprise. I plan on changing the world and I want to start by entering the music industry after I graduate from The Ohio State University, to pursue a career as a vocal performer or to establish my own record label to promote other aspiring artists. I am a recent graduate of a nationally-accomplished and one-of-a-kind music and leadership program called the Tarpon Springs Leadership Conservatory for the Arts. There I served my peers as the President of the organization and demonstrated how to be a more efficient and effective leader through the application of my core values everyday. I love being involved in my community, performing, leadership, promoting arts education, advocating for environmental conservation, and local music/arts projects. At OSU I am a part of the Green Engineering Scholars program to aid in exploring the world of earth-friendly living and building, in my constant mission to protect our planet.  I am the first in my family to attend The Ohio State University, and I am determined to be the first in my family to graduate college. When I’m not in class, I enjoy going to concerts, listening to records, exploring with friends, eating good food, and singing. I am very interested in research opportunities and internships involving music, sustainability, arts, and innovation.
