Year in Review

This past year has been one of my favorite college years so far. I learned how to grow as a leader, create relationships with my professors, make friendships outside of Fisher, and learn how to be a good mentor to those younger than me. Going into my sophomore year, I was nervous about living with my sorority — Delta Delta Delta – and losing my ties with business scholars friends I had made. Little did I know, putting myself in an unpredictable position was one of the best things I could have ever done. My business scholars coordinator, Jena Pugh, always told us to put ourselves in situations that make us feel uneasy so that we feel confident if we’re ever in these scenarios again. Putting myself in a house of 40 girls allowed me to build new friendships, meet older students, and learn about Ohio State outside of Fisher.

By living in, I also learned the art of balancing my two worlds at Ohio State, greek life and business scholars. At times, I was even able to blend these two world when I would invite my scholars friends to the house to meet my new friends! One night I invited my friends Charlotte and Brad to watch the new IT movie with my friend Taylor in TriDelt. They ended up staying at the house after the movie and jokingly made our sorority’s greek letters with their hands (picture attached). Charlotte and Brad enjoyed coming over to also get an idea of greek life and also to see what it would be like to live in a greek house sophomore year, rather than the dorms. Learning to maintain relationships between my two world taught me a lot about organization and prioritization. I was very cautious about equally keeping up with my old friends while allowing me to meet new people every week!

For my Junior year, I have decided to live with my business scholars girlfriends (picture attached) to keep my scholars relationship strong. I will continue my membership in TriDelt for the rest of my college experience; however, knowing that business scholars is a two year program, I wanted to find a way to keep these exceptional friends close to me.

Being in business scholars was one of the best experiences I have had at Ohio State. It was a great way to make friend the first month when everyone is still trying to get used to the campus. Also, surrounding myself with such motivating, successful, and passionate students challenged me to go above and beyond in and outside of the classroom every day.

Artifacts

One of my kept artifacts from the beginning of the year was the pin from Fisher Centennial. During this event, I was given the opportunity to listen to Les Wexner discuss his successful life as well as how Max Fihser impacted his decisions in an influential way. A common theme that stuck out in both Les and Max’s stories was the idea of perseverance. This experience was so prominent for me because I went to my first Business Scholars Leadership Council meeting afterwards with a  fresh mindset to do big things.

This pin is significant to me because it reminds me of the perseverance and strong mindset leaders need to acquire. I like the idea that it came directly from such an important event and that I am able to wear it if need be.

About Me

Hi, my name is Camila Cardenas and I am a freshman at The Ohio State University pursuing a BSBA in Marketing.  I was born in Colombia and moved to the US when I was 6, allowing me to be fluent in Spanish and English. Being involved with different cultures has taught me how to adapt to various situations and work well with others. I attended Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating with honors. Throughout my transition at Ohio State, I have engaged in various organizations such as Hispanic Business Student Association, Morrill Scholars, Business Scholars, Delta Delta Delta, and Business Scholars Leadership CouncilIMG_5506. Each association has allowed me to highlight my strengths and improve myself in a multitude of ways every week. My favorite organization has been Business Scholars. I have benefited from this program academically, professionally, and socially. Due to the strong community the scholars have, I have been exposed to events and opportunities that most students wouldn’t receive. I look forward to the experiences ahead that will make me a successful business woman. Go Bucks!
