Year of Service

Education

I spent time volunteering at the RISE Boys and Girls Club, and also was a Reach Out and Read volunteer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Teaching Others

The Rise Boys and Girls Club is a safe place for kids to go after school where they are valued and pushed to reach their full potential

Creating Relationships

The Reach Out and Read program allows kids and families to know about the importance of reading and to know about the resources that are out there for them.

Community

I got to know the kids on a personal level and learned more about the Columbus community

At the Boys and Girls Club I helped with club activities and created relationships with the kids. As a Reach Out and Read volunteer I read to children in the waiting area and informed families about the importance of reading and provided them with resources that are available to them.

Reach Out and Read Volunteer

This is the volunteer pin I received when I first started volunteering at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I started out volunteering as a research assistant for the Emergency Department, but quickly learned that I did not want to do that. I now realize that I do not want to do anything with Emergency medicine, so I learned from the quick experience. I am now a Reach Out and Read volunteer for Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I read to children while they wait in the waiting area at the doctor’s office. I get to interact with the children and help them further their education. I enjoy getting to interact with the several children I have met so far and love hearing their stories. I am learning how to better interact with children through this experience. I also know that I definitely want to go into Pediatrics in my career because I enjoy working with children. They bring light to my life and are always fighting no matter how rough their life may be. They are truly inspiring and I would love to be surrounded by them every day in my career. So, this pin is hopefully representing one of many years volunteering at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I am excited to see what other opportunities await me there.

Year in Review

My first year at Ohio State was one that I will never forget. I have grown so much in areas of service, leadership, and academics. I was able to evolve into a better leader because of Mount Leadership Society. This scholars group offered me so many opportunities and I am excited to see the many more that will be offered. I was able to help lead a team where we put on three service projects related to the social issue of poverty. I worked along side some great peers to help lead this team and accomplish some great things. It was nice to see all the things we accomplished in such a short amount of time. Not only did I get to help lead a team, but I also was able to participate in numerous service events with my peers. This allowed me to widen my experience in service as well as make many great relationships with my peers. I am grateful to be part of such an amazing program that allows me to expand on these topics. Not only did I expand in that way, but I also gained a lot of academic experience. My year started out tough, but I ended the year even stronger. I learned so much from my professors. I am glad all my work has paid off so far. I am grateful to have received a volunteer position at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to be a undergraduate research assistant position in the Emergency Medicine department. None of this would’ve been possible without the support from my peers, family, and faculty. I am excited to see what the next few years have to offer.

My team and I received this award for preparing the most inspiring presentation at Legacy Night. This night was to sum up our Legacy Week and show everyone what we accomplished throughout that time. Legacy Week is something the Mount Scholars do to honor Ruth Weimer Mount. Each team created and put on three service projects at different organizations. I was a team captain for Team Poverty. I had other team captains who accompanied me through this amazing experience as well. We worked with the Clintonville Resource Center, Homeless Families Foundation, and the YWCA. We made projects where we helped people put together resumes as well as put together an educational craft day with the kids. We also put together a project where we made blankets with the people at the YWCA and served them a snack, fruit pizza, at the end. Legacy Week taught me a lot. I learned more about my leadership style and how to put together projects  so they can be successful. There were a lot of ups and downs throughout the four months my team and I experienced, but it was all worth it in the end. It was amazing to see how much we touched the people we helped at the organizations. I talked with many people and got to learn about their stories. I talked with a little girl who told me about her giraffe stuffed animal named Pouch. My advisor and I made Pouch a little pillow out of the scraps leftover from making blankets. It was nice to just socialize with other people who may be having a hard time and don’t have many people to talk to. We wanted to show everyone how much we touched their lives, so we put together a very meaningful presentation where everyone spoke about what they learned and the people they talked with. At the end, we held hands to symbolize that we were bridging the gap between poverty, which was what inspired us throughout the whole thing. This was such a touching experience for me and I am so glad I was a team captain for Team Poverty.

My freshman year here at Ohio State I joined the Mount leadership society and I couldn’t be happier with this decision. The year has already been filled with tons of great memories and service projects. In this picture, some Mounties and I thanked the Board for all of their hard work. I wouldn’t have wanted to stand out in the cold cheering with anyone else but them. This is just one of the many things Mount has already done this year. I love helping others and doing things for other people, so Mount is a great fit for me. I chose this picture not just because it involves Mount, but because it involves the many friends I have made throughout the year already. Every single one of them pushes me to be a better person and leader. I have changes for the better because of Mount. It has made me a better leader as well as a better person all around. I wouldn’t want to spend my years at Ohio State with anyone else but my Mount family.

G.O.A.L.S.

As a second year at Ohio State, I have been thinking about what I want to do with my STEP money. I want to use it to do study abroad. More specifically, I want to travel with the nursing program and provide care to people in Africa on the trip. This will be very exciting and I am very excited to go on this study abroad trip. I am also involved with research here at Ohio State. I am a research assistant for the Fazio Lab. The researchers’ experiments deal with social psychology. I enjoy learning about the research process and learning knew things from the researchers. Working in the Fazio Lab broadens my education and makes me appreciate research. I have planned out what classes I will take according to my future career. I have decided to take up minors in Global Public Health and Psychology because these are minors that will help me be more successful as a Pediatric nurse one day. Most of my GE courses were finished before I got to Ohio State, but I have chosen the rest of my GE’s based on my interests. One of my favorites was the History of Medicine in Western Society. It was awesome to learn about the History of Medicine and recommend it to any health related majors. I strive to do the very best in my classes and this shows in my GPA. My curriculum so far prepares me for my future career. I can’t wait to get into the actual nursing classes and learn more about how I can help people medically. Being involved with Mount gives me a lot of opportunities to give back to my community. I have taken part in several service projects and I am even a committee chair for our service committee. Giving back to the community is so rewarding and I am glad Mount gives me the opportunities to do so. I have also become a Reach Out and Read volunteer for Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This not only lets me give back to the community, but allows me to strengthen my communication skills with children. I hope to be a pediatric nurse some day, so I knew this would be a great fit for me. This project focuses on education as a social justice issue. I read and interact with children in the waiting area and encourage parents to read to their children at home. So far Ohio State has given me a lot of opportunities to strengthen me as a person and I can’t wait to see what the next few years have in store.

Though I am still working on my communication skills, these activities have allowed me to strengthen this skill and I plan on continuing to do so. This will allow me to be able to be very successful in my career one day.

Joining the cross country team my senior year was such a blessing. Running that year made me grow as a person. My favorite and most memorable part about cross country was when we would cheer our younger cross country teams on. The smiles on their faces when we would come made it worth all the while. We would start off by helping them get warmed up and get pumped for their race. Of course, they had so much more energy on race day than we did. After we would help them warm up, we would go to every spot possible to cheer them on. I was very sick that day, but that was all forgotten when we started to cheer them on. It occurred to me that making others’ days can brighten your day so much more. These children appreciated what we were doing and it was very clear from their huge smiles that crossed their faces. It was rewarding to help those girls continue to race when they wanted to give up. There were several times when I wanted to give up, but when others cheered me on it pushed me to finish the race. Those young girls worked very hard and pushed themselves to finish that race. Pushing yourself and finishing a task is the most rewarding thing. This may seem like just a rewarding service project, but it also applies to learning. Cross country is a very tough sport and finishing a race and pushing yourself is very rewarding in the end. When I push myself to learn and accomplish my goals, it is so rewarding and I believe that cross country allowed me to push myself even more. Also, it made me realize that if I can finish a race, especially when I was very sick, I can do many things. Cross country was a great service and learning experience.

About Me

Hello everyone! I am a Sophomore here at The Ohio State University and I am a Pre-Nursing major. Also, I am involved with the Mount Scholars as well as the Morrill Scholars here and have really enjoyed my time so far. I am from New Philadelphia, OH which is about 45 minutes from the Canton area. I attended New Philadelphia High School where I was involved with many clubs and sports. I was mainly involved in Key Club, Spanish Club, National Honor Society, and Renaissance Club. I also played softball and basketball all four years in high school. I joined the cross country team my senior year. Let’s just say I was in the best shape of my life my senior year because of cross country. When I graduated from high school, I spent my summer working at the Uhrichsville Water Park as a lifeguard. After my adventures through high school, I have finally found myself here at the best university out there. I plan on being involved in many clubs here at Ohio State.  In the future I plan on becoming a Pediatric nurse. Since this is my career goal, I want to study abroad while I’m here at Ohio State. Enough about my academic life and activities, I would like to now stress the other important things: my hobbies and interests. Obviously, I love playing sports. They make it easy to make new friends and make for a good time. I also love reading. When I have the time, which doesn’t seem to be often, I enjoy reading books. I like reading mystery books. Other things that interests me are cats and dogs. I absolutely love cats and have two of my own: Nala and Simba. I also have two dogs: Bella and Poquito. I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about me!
