Year in Review

This past year I have had many new experiences and have been able to grow stronger and better as the year as gone on. I have become the VP of Finance, been elected to the executive board of club field hockey, and have been a peer mentor to a freshman in the International Affairs scholars program. All of these experiences have expanded my horizons and diversified my activities. I believe I have passed my expectations for myself for the year as I have grown as a person and allowed myself to get involved in as many things as possible while not spreading myself too thin. Experiences such as being the VP Finance for a sorority are opportunities that don’t come along every day and are not easy to get. If you had told me a year ago that I would have had this position I would not have believed you whatsoever. I have continued to come out of my shell this year and I could not be happier about that. While the first semester did not go as well as I had hopped academically I still built off of the previous year and upped the semester gpa. This semester will also be a significant improvement from fall semester and I hope to continue to get better and better.

G.O.A.L.S.

Being a member of International Affairs scholars has enabled me to think on a more global scale. Diversity is a major part of the evolving world and educating yourself on different cultures can help others feel more included and lead to better work. I had originally chosen International Affairs scholars because I grew up in a very diverse neighborhood outside of DC and I loved the idea of traveling to other countries and experiencing other cultures first hand was something I wanted to get out of my college experience. During the spring semester of 2017 I will be studying abroad in Manchester, England and be able to experience some of these cultures first hand for a prolonged period of time.

I will be having an internship with the Chesapeake Bayhawks, a major league lacrosse team, during this summer. This will help me achieve the original inquiry component of scholars. I will be in charge of marketing and sales for their season this summer and be able to help contribute new ideas for their marketing scheme and other operational standards with the company.

As a double major in both Business Administration and Sport Industry, I have pursued course work that directly pertains to my dream career as a marketing manager in the front office of a major league sports team. Through taking marketing as well as different business classes, I have been able to understand the business side of sports more in-depth as a revenue-generating operation while being a sport industry major and enrolling in such classes has allowed me the opportunity to become more knowledgeable about the uniqueness of sports as a business.  As for my General Education courses, I have mainly chosen classes that interest me such as Yiddish- Holocaust through film. I knew that this would be one of the only times in my life I would have the opportunity to pursue something such as this class and be able to really look more deeply into the Holocaust and it was an eye-opening class for me.

I currently am a leader within 2 organizations on campus. As VP finance for Delta Gamma I serve on the executive board as well as the House Corporation and help the chapter achieve success. Additionally, I am the social chair and team apparel chair for The Ohio State Club Field Hockey team. Leadership has always been a part of my life and I plan to continue this throughout my time at Ohio State and beyond.

In being a member of Delta Gamma, I have been involved in the philanthropy Service for Sight for the past year and a half. I have the great pleasure of going to visit the Ohio State School for the Blind and work with children who are blind or visually impaired in their school environment as well as when they are having fun such as an Easter egg hunt. This experience has been one of a kind as most people are not provided with the opportunity to work so hands-on with these children and build a powerful relationship with them. I plan to continue to be involved with the Ohio State School for the Blind for the rest of my time at Ohio State and hopefully with the Service for Sight foundation for the foreseeable future.

The G.O.A.L.S. that have been laid out by the Honors & Scholars program have really laid a ground work for my first two years at Ohio State and I am sure will continue to mold the rest of my career here. I have been able to really excel in the Leadership goal in the previous year but I still believe that that is something I could truly work on to become an even stronger candidate to employers regarding that goal. Academics has always been something I love and I am excited to pursue this in the future as well and hope to continue to excel.

Career

Resume

I believe my resume is very clear and concise. It does it’s job in getting the point across to employers in the 30 seconds- 1 minute that they will quickly look at it. It also provides enough information that I will be able to build off of it during interviews and be able to talk about my experiences. My previous two internships have been extremely useful in my growth as a student as as a working woman. Last summer, I worked at Aramark at Catholic University as an Administrative intern which provided me with the experience in a professional setting and helped me get acclimated to an adult lifestyle along with improving my communication skills.

Additionally, being Vice President of Finance for Delta Gamma has allowed me to grow and understand the technical aspects of running a business. I am in charge of all of the finances for a 200 person chapter with a $652,000 budget, essentially I am running a small business. Taking charge of this as a 20 year old who is also a full time student has been challenging but well worth the work. I have learned how to properly make a budget for the upcoming year, administer dues and fees and communicate concisely and effectively with our national offices.

One of the main skills that I possess that sets me apart from my peers is my competitiveness. I have never been one to give up. I continuously put myself out there in order to achieve my goals and that transfers over to my work life. While this could sometimes be considered a negative in the fact that it could get the best of me, I can also work very well in a group setting working with others as well as helping others achieve their goals.

picture of a check

This picture of a check represents my growth this past semester as Vice President of Finance for Delta Gamma. The duties of this job have transformed my communication, time management, and problem solving skills. I unfortunately came into the position as our national council put us on Report to Finance which essentially means our chapter was in financial trouble. It turned in to my job to turn that around and that has provided me with the opportunity to communicate with Nationals and my advisors along with problem solving opportunities.

Sports

Sports are one of the key things in the real world that I learn through. As a Sport Industry major it is key to keep up with major sports news and the variety of contracts and differences throughout the different leagues. It is something that I love and want to throw myself into in order to be completely and totally successful in my career. Although the career is not easy to get into, I am determined to be successful and thats why I think that I will be great.

Being a member of Delta Gamma has allowed me to become a better person and break out of my shell. My mother was also a member of Delta Gamma, so it has been a part of me since I was born. It has been great to be a part of something that my mother and I have both experienced and bond over that with her. Additionally, Delta Gamma has developed me as a person and leader. I have had opportunities to volunteer, lead and make amazing friends that I would not have been able to without Delta Gamma.

field hockey

Field hockey has been major part of my life since I was 10 years old. Through this sport, I have gained confidence to break out of my shell and allow me to become a leader as well. I was a captain on both my high school teams and my club team and allowed me to really hone the skills of a leader which has lead me to gain the club team at Ohio State and eventually get elected to the executive board.

maryland

Being from Maryland has started to become an identifying factor as I now live in Ohio. Additionally, being from Maryland and moving here for college has helped me grow. I had previously been a very big homebody and did not entirely like to be away from home for a prolonged period of time. Choosing Ohio State over the University of Maryland, which was 10 minutes from my home, was one of the hardest decisions of my life but it has helped me gain the self-assurance that you should to grow into the person you want to be in college.

This is a picture of my nephew, Henry Callahan. He is four months old and the first baby born to my immediate family. I never knew it was possible to love someone so immediately like I did with him and he has made me want to be a better person in everything I do. Knowing that I will eventually have someone that looks up to me as a role model makes me realize just how much my actions can impact someone and that every single thing I do is meaningful.
