Element Four: The Importance of Early Intervention

Early intervention can be a crucial tool in aiding a child’s development. Early intervention simply means acting early on concerns you may be having about the child’s development. Early childhood is that important period where early intervention most often takes place and is most beneficial to that child’s development. Recognizing developmental delays and addressing them immediately is detrimental to their developmental progress long term. The earlier the intervention, the more likely it is to be effective. One of the first steps you can take as a guardian is to tell the child’s nurse or physician that you have been noticing delays and would like a developmental screening. If there are still concerns after the screening, request a referral to a specialist and call your local early intervention program to seek resources and potential assistance. Obtaining resources early on can increase your child’s ability to reach their potential. Intervention can include things like speech therapy, physical therapy, and other services depending on the needs of the child and the family. These interventions can greatly impact the child’s ability to learn new skills and achieve success in their academic and social lives. It may be difficult for some to accept that their child might be falling behind or developing a little slower than others but those emotions must be pushed aside in order to support the best interest of the child (Why act early).

Greetings! Above I’ve inserted a PowerPoint I created which summarizes three pieces of children’s literature and discusses how they can help families with factors influencing child development. Enjoy!

Element Two: Factors influencing development in early childhood

Hello, parents and guardians! In this post I will be summarizing three important factors that influence development in early childhood. First, physical environment plays an important role in early childhood development and safety. There are several things to consider when choosing certain furnishings and even certain daycares or pre-schools, such as easy to clean tile or hardwood flooring, solid wood furniture (no plywood), and spaces for cots, cribs or other places for rest and naps (naeyc.org). Easily cleaned surfaces are important where children are present to prevent illnesses and disease. Nap time is also important for toddlers in order to prevent over-tiredness and to promote healthy sleeping patterns (kidshealth.org). Secondly, good nutrition habits in early childhood can positively impact development by reducing risk of high blood pressure, cavities, heart disease etc. Attached to this blog post is an image created by the CDC showing the ideal nutritional meal for children. A good balanced meal can even help improve mood and energy levels (cdc.gov). Lastly, technology can have a less positive impact on early childhood development. Allowing young children open access to smart devices such as tablets and iPads can lead to excessive amounts of screen time, and even exposure to violent or otherwise dangerous content on the internet. Excessive screen time can also result in changes in mood or even temper tantrums when removing the device from them. As a guardian of the child, you have a right to raise them however you may see fit. Taking these developmental influencers that I’ve mentioned into consideration can be beneficial to young children’s long term development.
