Year in Review

Since starting my freshman year at OSU I have grown as a student. For example, I have changes the ways I study and I have learned and utilized academic resources that have helped me with my classes. Before coming to college I thought it was going to be easy to balance my classes, social life, and extra-curricular activities just like it was in high school. Unfortunately, these expectations were not met because I found it to be quite challenging at first but now I seem to have it under control. Also, before starting college I thought the HSS program was going to help me discover what medical profession I wanted to pursue and how to pursue. Thankfully, the HSS program did just that. Two goals of mine for college and HSS in my second year are to maintain my GPA and to stay on track for pursuing my desire to become a PA.

Academic Enrichment: For this section I interviewed Joshua Hatterschide, he graduated from OSU in December. Although Joshua is not in HSS, he and I both are Biochemistry majors, who share common interests in what we want to do with our degrees. I first asked Josh what classes he took here at OSU. He answered general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, history of HIV, and physiology along with many others. I then asked what activities he was involved in on campus. Josh said that he was heavily involved in  his undergraduate research. He also stated that he went on a service trip to Honduras and  often volunteered at Riverside Hospital and Noor Community Clinic. Finally, I asked Josh what were his plans for school in the fall. Josh replied that he is attending the University of Pennsylvania in the cellular and molecular biology PhD. program. Josh wants to specialize in the study of microbiology, virology, and parasitology. Lastly, he decided to attend grad school instead of medical school because he wanted to eventually teach and hopefully one day have his own research lab.

Service Engagement: Over the past academic year I have spent over 20 hours volunteering. I have volunteered at a church making sandwiches for the homeless on a Saturday morning .I made bracelets for Buckeyes for a Cause for an evening. In January, I did the MLK Day of service through the Pay it Forward program here at OSU, and lastly I have spent the whole spring semester volunteering 3-5 hours a week at NNEMAP Food Pantry for the OSU Semester of Service Program.

One of the most memorable service experiences I had was during the MLK Day of Service. I was assigned to volunteer at the Franklington Gardens from 9am-2pm. The Franklington Gardens is a non-profit organization that grows produce for people that live in a community where healthy options are hard to find. There my role was to do some hands-on work in the garden and to travel around the community and spread awareness about Franklington Gardens’ new program, where fresh produce can be delivered right to your door. Something I gained from this experience is learning that there are amazing programs such as Franklington Gardens that one to help people in need live a healthy lifestyle.

Career

After completing my first semester of college, I understand that my current major can lead to many career paths such as a physician or a medical lab assistant. I have also thought about a secondary path of study in medical laboratory science, which can lead right into a career as a medical lab assistant. So far I have learned that there are many resources here at OSU and on the internet that can help me with my career path. For example, there are many career search engines on the internet, there are career coaches available to help as well, and academic advisors within many majors are more than willing to help. Living a healthy lifestyle is very important while balancing many academic, extracurricular, and social activities here at college. I plan on visiting the gym at least three times a week and eating at least three well balanced meals a day. In order to do this I plan on scheduling a time during the week to visit the gym for at least an hour and making sure that my plate at meal time is balanced with plenty of fruits and vegetables. If I follow these guidelines I am confident I can stick to a healthy lifestyle. One way to better utilize the wisdom of upperclassman and faculty members is by always asking for help when I need and whether it be advice or help on homework. This will be helpful throughout my college journey because it allows me to make connections on campus and know that there are people here to help me. I hope to grow next semester by learning new ways to study in order to be more prepared for exams and I hope to grow in the future by improve my interviewing skills in order to get a job or an internship.

In my second year I completed a 40-hour service project at NNEMAP Food Pantry. During my experience I learned a  lot about service to those who live in low-income neighborhoods.  I uploaded a power point slide that I presented during the Health Science Scholars Service Symposium below.

About Me

Scan0001Dorian Butler is a first-year student from Macedonia, Ohio. She is a duel-major in both Chemistry and Spanish. Dorian plans on entering the medical field one day and eventually becoming fluent in Spanish. One can describe Dorian as friendly, soft-spoken, and shy. But once you get to know her she won’t be as shy anymore. While in high school Dorian was involved in extra-curricular activities such as National Honors Society, Spanish Club, Girl Scouts, and volunteering at an animal shelter. She hopes to become involved in similar activities during her time here at The Ohio State University. As a learner, Dorian likes to utilize note taking so she can refer to them before a test. Also, making flash cards is a frequent study skill for her as well. Dorian is excited to begin her academic career here at The Ohio State University.
