MMC Scholars Seminar

Monday, November 2, 2015

The business professional I interviewed for the MMC informational report was Mr. Fred Fogg. I chose Mr. Fogg because he is high up in a financial business position which I am very interested in. He runs the transition management group and is co-head of portfolio solutions at Macquarie Capital Incorporation. His information is as flowing; phone number: 1 (212)231-1194, email: fred.fogg@macquarie.com, and address: 125 W 55th St, New York, NY. Unfortunately, when I was interviewing Mr. Fogg he happened to be on a business trip in California, so I had to skype him. Although this method still worked very effectively, I was not able to se his office/ workplace.

Mr. Fogg attended college at Lafayette for his undergrad, where he majored in computer science and then moved on to Duke University for his graduate education, where he majored in finance. He chose to go to graduate school after interning and realizing that he wanted more business skills. After he graduated from Duke, he got his first job at Morgan Stanley in their equity department and has been working in equities and equity related training since that time.

Pertaining to skills needed for this field, Mr. Fogg said that a quantitative background is very helpful due to the large amount of math associated with the job. Also, having good interpersonal skills and being able to communicate with others is essential, especially when you are on the trading floor. To get into this field, Mr. Fogg said it is very important to learn about markets and equities early on and how they fit into the economy and make sure that it is something you are interested in. The next step would be to formulate your own opinions based on your understanding of markets and make accurate predictions such as what is under valued or over valued in he market. These skills and interests will help differentiate you when applying for jobs.

As far as the future of his field, Mr. Fogg said that the financial industry has been going through a lot of changes over the last seven or eight years and a lot less people have been working in said industry. Due to market changes many firms have been deciding to downsize, which is not something a college student looking to break into this field wants to hear. Fortunately, in Mr. Fogg’s company consolidation and downsizing has seized and numbers have remained relatively constant, so as a result the longer term outcome is looking very good for these jobs once you attain one.

Mr. Fogg said that his least favorite part of this job was how early you must arrive at the office, but it is a prerequisite for most business jobs in the city and you learn to get used to it. His favorite part of the job is working with and following the market, figuring out what values are going to go up or go down, and investing accordingly. Also, the trading aspect of the job is very interesting to him due to the strategy of it, seeing almost as “putting together pieces of a puzzle”.

Other related areas to this field include investment banking and security trading. Also, people who work in technology for financial services are becoming more and more vital to day to day operations due to the increasing reliance on technology.

This interview was very helpful and eye opening. I learned that a big step to get into this field would be to learn about markets all on your own initially. I had always thought that the way would be to learn about it in college first and then go into your own research. I also realized that the equity field may not be the one for me due to the large amount of math necessary. However, this interview has shown me how helpful an informational interview can be and I have decided to interview my god father during Thanksgiving break. He is a television director for YES network and that is a field I do not know much about, but I am interested in learning the facts and duties of the job. I am still keeping an open mind for a job in equity or any other finance related career.
