Student Groups

Outside of research experience and internship, active participation in the CEGE student groups is one of the best ways to learn about career options for civil engineers. I advise the ACI and Concrete Canoe student groups and encourage you to explore the following links to learn more about the two groups:

American Concrete Institute (ACI) Student Group

At the start of the spring semester ACI collaborated with the professional Central Ohio ACI and the Columbus chapter of ICRI, to host a speed dating event. Students paired up to rotate around and get to personally know concrete professionals from throughout the community.

Student Competitions:

In Fall 2022 four students again competed in an iteration of the pervious concrete competition. Kamilla Wieckowski, Brendan Maestro, Sanjay Nanda, and Danny Vazquez designed and tested more than 16 different mixtures of pervious concrete before finalizing their best mix. At the competition in Dallas the students placed a very respectable 6th out of 34 teams! The students were also able to enjoy some Texas culture while attending the conference, with Danny and Sanjay having custom shaped and fitted hats made while in cowboy country! 🙂

In Fall 2018 the competition centered around production of pervious concrete. Bryan Sluis and Frank designed, tested, and flew to the ACI Convention in Las Vegas to compete against other student teams.

Concrete Canoe

In Spring 2023 the concrete canoe team, led by Danny Vazquez, competed in its first competition since Spring 2017.  The team’s canoe made it to the competition site without cracking and, although super heavy, both survived the float test and allowed the rowing team to complete the canoe race! Great job Canoe team!
