Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

The GOALS present a convenient and inspirational way to organize the mental faculties of any honors student, but I find them to be a particularly poignant composition of ideas. The acronym GOALS stands for Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement, the five pillars that represent the ideals of the Honors college at OSU. Fulfilling each of the GOALS is of utmost importance to me, and I have created a mental outline for tackling each of them.

I have already begun the process of making myself more globally aware by taking a course this semester on world cinema, a topic that has already provided me with an expanded knowledge of world culture. Each film covered is a representation of the society and time in which it was composed, which allows the viewer to experience that culture. I am one such viewer, and have already vicariously lived in Taiwan, Cold War Poland, late twentieth century Bengal, and modern Africa. To further expand my horizons, I will look to study abroad during my college career, likely traveling to Spain to apply my five years of Spanish learning.

Academic Enrichment is second nature to most honors students; however, I believe seek this even above the standard of my classmates. I plan on continuing along the Honors Mathematics track, which is one of the most difficult course sequences offered at The Ohio State University. Alongside this, I plan on pursuing research within the Mathematics Department, in any topic I can plunge myself into. I relish the challenge laid before me, and cannot wait to engage the subject I most enjoy on its the frontier of discovery.

Since my arrival at OSU, I have sought to participate in a number of the activities and clubs offered at this institution, and have thus far thrown myself into some of the activities I already loved, and found new favorites to stand alongside them. One of the newest additions to my repertoire is DanceSportOSU, a club dedicated to learning and competing with ballroom dances. The aspect of the club I have found most beautiful is its impeccable organization; the club leaders have a place for everything and everything is put in its place. Each leader knows all of the information needed to run the club on their own, or knows which person possesses the necessary intel. As I have begun to fully invest myself in this activity, I have realized that I will likely become one of these leaders; my, that will be fun. Learning and then applying leadership skills from such capable individuals will be incredible, and I look forward to watching the development of my capabilities as I grow.

Another application of my dance abilities will be toward Buckeyethon, the dance marathon to fundraise for fighting cancer. I plan on participating this year, and the next, and the next, until I graduate. I love dancing, and what better way to apply it then to a marathon for the activity. More importantly than my love dancing though, would be my love of people. The greatest moments of my life have occurred when I am talking to people, or to one person. I love helping people on a personal level, in the way most meaningful to them. Buckeyethon allows for the lives of thousands of children to be improved on an incredibly personal level, and I would love to offer myself to contribute to that cause in any way that I am able.

About Me

Greetings! My name is Jackson Burkholder and I am a freshman mathematics major. I love problem solving and a good challenge, and will readily pursue any activity that allows me to chase both of these desires. My hobbies include tabletop strategy and role playing games, as well as reading the occasional fantasy or science fiction novel. I currently have no specific career plan, however I am open to any path that allows me to make full use of my mental faculties on a daily basis.
