Office of Interprofessional Practice and Education Scholarship Guidelines

Purpose

Interprofessional collaboration can lead to outcomes that exceed that which could be obtained by each participant working independently. This is indeed the case with Research and other forms of Scholarship. We also recognize that each participant in interprofessional scholarship should get credit for their contribution to the work. Therefore, we propose these guidelines for scholarship grounded in data or outcomes emerging as the result of participation by a student, faculty, facilitator/coach, staff, patient, or mentor in any aspect of BuckIPE or while participating on an interprofessional team.

Team Interactions

The interprofessional team should:

  • Clearly identify roles at the beginning of and periodically during the collaboration.
  • Assign responsibilities based on individual and disciplinary knowledge and experience.
  • Hold each participant accountable for their contribution.
  • Align each participant’s contribution with their competency, expertise, and limitations.
  • Discourage discipline-centric or monolithic views.
  • Establish and regularly review the timeline and work progress.
  • Allocate resources on the team equitably.
  • Maximize participation by avoiding time conflicts.
  • Ensure equity of participation across all team members, ensuring they have an equal opportunity to participate.
  • Reframe opposing views as an opportunity to clarify roles.

Inclusivity Guidelines

These guidelines apply to all scholarship that involves personnel, content, or evaluation data derived from the Office of Interprofessional Practice and Education (OIPE).

Everyone who contributed to the design, development, and/or evaluation of data related to the intervention being studied should be invited (but not required) to serve as co-investigators/co-authors on research/presentations/publications. This includes everyone who substantially contributed to the conceptualization of the research question(s), the design of the research project, or the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of the research data.  Contributors should be proactively invited to participate in authorship unless that person declines. Participants’ contributions should be validated with the Office of IPE to ensure that all parties are invited and represented.

Intellectual Attribution Guidelines

All publications/presentations collaborating with the Office of Interprofessional Practice and Education must acknowledge the OIPE.

Authorship Order

Authorship order should be discussed when the project is conceptualized, in light of the agreed-upon timeline, and before work commences. In general, the following guidelines apply.

  • First author attribution should be for the person doing the most work on the manuscript. This is typically the person who contributes the most to the research project.
  • Unless otherwise agreed upon, the last author is generally the most senior contributor.
  • Middle author positions should be listed alphabetically or based on roles in the project and anticipated contribution to the project.

The OIPE uses the International Committee of Medical Journal Editor’s authorship criteria.1

All potential contributors should be allowed to contribute at this level. Authors should meet the following four criteria:

  1. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  2. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  3. Final approval of the version to be published; AND
  4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in an acknowledgments section.

Ownership

Curricula and evaluation tools are among the technologies that can be copyrightable. Review the Intellectual Property Policy for the university: https://oied.osu.edu/sites/default/files/pdfs/IP-Policy.pdf
