From a young age, an innate curiosity was instilled in me. I wondered how and why the world worked around me. I discovered that this curiosity was a thirst for knowledge, which could be partially satisfied through reading. I became an voracious reader of novels, classics, nonfiction, and biographies.

Entering high school, I began to find that experiences could also help satisfy my curiosity. I developed a passion for the sciences, cultures around the world, and serving others. I took all three of the AP sciences my high school offered (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). These classes gave me a small taste of higher learning. My junior year, I was awarded a scholarship to attend a cultural immersion trip in El Salvador. There, I came face to face with the struggles women face to provide a better life for themselves and their community.  This experience demonstrated to me how extremely fortunate I am to live in a country where I can choose what I want to study and decide what career I want to pursue. Many women throughout the world are not afforded this luxury.

During my junior year of high school, my sister and I founded Students for Seniors, an organization that visits a local nursing home after school. The students we brought interacted and socialized with the residents. I learned about the world around me through their stories. Sometimes hearing other peoples’ stories can deepen one’s own understanding of the world.

I also wished to serve my Class of 2015. I was elected to be the Co-President of my class for all four years of high school. During those four years, I was taught crucial leadership skills I would need for the rest of my life. A leader is someone who listens. It a role meant to hear others and represent them. It is also impossible to please every person. No matter how persistently one tries, not everyone will be happy. However, it is imperative to listen and work diligently to achieve the best outcome.

At OSU, I aspire to learn more about the people of the world and their cultures by being with them. I fully intend on taking advantage of the many study abroad programs available. I have already applied to the London Honors Program to get started on these adventures.

Through the various classes and experiences I had in high school. I have found my calling to be an engineer. It is the study of how the world works around us. Engineers then use this knowledge to benefit others. At OSU, I have enrolled into the Fundamentals of Engineering Honors program for my freshman year. There, I will begin my journey of rigorous study, discovery, and leadership to find how I can serve others as an engineer.
