[ “Year in Review” is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student. You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year. G.O.A.L.S.
I came to Ohio State almost two years ago full of ambitions, throughout my time in college those ambitions have been cultivated into several specific goals. Some goals I’ve already achieved such as finishing last spring semester with a 4.0, working in clinical care, earning a leadership position in a student organization volunteering at Cleveland Clinic and joining a sorority that I feel at home in and passionate about. Some goals I hope to achieve in the near future like working closer with my sorority’s philanthropy, earning another 4.0 this semester, performing well on my GRE, and graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. Other goals will take longer to reach, after graduating I hope to stay at Ohio State in our neonatal nurse practitioner program. Eventually I’d like to get a doctorate of neonatal nursing and use it to change the fact that the United States has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world. I hope that my goals currently and in the future reflect the values of Honors and Scholars at the Ohio State University.
- Global Awareness: In the United States infant and maternal mortality rates are much higher in minority families. I one day hope to draw attention to this issue and work to change it. Every baby deserves to see their first birthday and every mom deserves to watch their child grow up. At risk communities have higher infant mortality rates due to lack of access to prenatal care. I hope to help make prenatal care available to all women regardless of how much money they make or where they grew up.
- Original Inquiry: Working as a patient care assistant I’ve been given the opportunity to contribute my own opinions and ideas to the care of real patients. Allowing me to think outside the box and develop skills I can use with patients of my own someday.
- Academic Enrichment: Since starting at Ohio State I have only improved my GPA, I continue to aim for 4.0 semester GPAs and a spot on the dean’s list.
- Leadership Development: Earning a leadership position in Romophos Sophomore Honorary allowed me to realize that I actually enjoy leading. I hope to use the skills I’ve gained this year to earn a leadership position within my sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha.
- Service Engagement: Volunteering at Cleveland Clinic on critical care units all summer taught me so much. I was able to directly serve patients at a time of great vulnerability and pain. It reminded me why I set goals of entering the health care field in the first place; to serve others.

About Me
My name is Avery Bryant, I was born in Portland, Oregon but I grew up in Doylestown, Ohio, a small down about 45 minutes south of Cleveland. I attended Chippewa High School and in high school I was a member of National Honors Society, Student Council, and I ran track. Ohio State was my dream school, and I’m really excited to be here. I was a part of the OSU academy program so I took most of my “freshman” classes through Ohio State while I was still in high school. Now I am living in Halloran House with my three wonderful roommates and I am a molecular genetics major. After college my plan is to attend medical school. My dream is to move to a big city and work as a pediatric oncologist !
