Scholars Informational Report

November 10, 2015

James Baumer

I am currently an undecided business major. So, for my first semester of college, I planned a learning curve for myself in order to narrow down the field that I wanted to specialize. Thus, for my information report I interviewed James Baumer through an hour long phone call. James Baumer has a MBA from Xavier University as well as BS in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently a Project Manager in charge of organizing the paper manufacturing for International Paper. Also, James mentioned that he often travels around the world for business trips. He has traveled internationally to Russia, India, China, Brazil, and Poland to seek possible business partnerships.

James Baumer grew up with a fascination for engineering and wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps by majoring in business operations. He then landed a job at Danis Construction Company and instantly impressed Belcan TechsServices. He was offered a new job after only a year on the job with nearly double the salary, I didn’t ask him exact numbers. After nearly 7 years with Belcan, James wasn’t too fond of his job so he searched the market and was able to land a job back with Danis Construction retaining the position as a Manger of Manufacturing processes. His most recent job switch was back in 1996 when he was hired to Manager the mass production of paper at the International Paper Company in Loveland, Ohio. Again, he managed to boost his salary. However, Baumer was given the task of keeping the equipment well maintained as well as helping to improve the technology, given that he is qualified to do so with an engineering  associates degree. Thus, James shared with me that initially he had to work extremely hard and do many tedious tasks, but after proving his work ethic he continued to climb to new positions and get himself where he is today.

This interview was actually even more helpful then I expected. I had never known about the responsibilities of a project manager and it opened my eyes. The idea of leading an operation and overlooking the entire process is something that I may truly want to do with my life. As mentioned before I had no clear direction of business that I was looking to study, however, after learning about all of Baumer’s job I believe I too could do that job really well. After taking our Focus 2 Assignments early in the year, the values I was selected for were creativity, income, and influence. Each of these values Baumer made sure to emphasize so it became clear to me that either this job, or a job closely related is ideal for me. Thus, I began to question James about the requirements for having a managerial role.

Requirements to become a project manager is a business degree, preferably a BS in Project Management. However there are numerous other skills required for a Project Manager. You must be able to motivate others to work together to the best of their ability. Also, you must make an organized plan as to how your going to run your operation. Then, after creating your business plan you must clearly illustrate to the entire firm exactly how everything is going to be run to keep everyone on the same page. Knowing all of this can allow me to shape my classes in order to prepare myself for these requirements. Doing this will allow me to be ahead of the game and prepare myself to be a Project Manager. However, James went on to mention that he believed the most difficult part of the job was uniting such a diverse population to work as a team.

When asked about how he chose to keep his operation running smoothly he mentioned hard work and most importunely, relationships with his fellow employees. Being in charge of an operation is quite stressful and at times the workers feel like pawns in a process. So, James noted that he liked to develop relationships with each employee so that everyone would enjoy work. It also greatly impacts the company productivity with every employee having a positive, up-beat attitude. Nevertheless, he explained to me that despite the close relationships he has with his workers, he needs to make a fine line to differentiate friend from co-worker. So that everyone knows they’re still responsible to meet their quota to keep the business operating exacting how James planned.

Lastly, I worked with James to discuss possible internships I could do. An internship now would present the opportunity to begin to become familiar with what it takes to be a manager of any kind. I would be able to watch and learn from experience. Also, I would be able to present my skills to the company and hope that I make a great impression for the future. While James did not know much about the companies available internships, I did some research and found the companies contact information, and while Ohio State is not one of the focus schools they get many of their interns from, they are completely open to allowing anyone apply. It would be an unpaid summer internship but they provide meal and housing benefits. So if I am able to live and eat for free and experience what its like to be a project manger, I would completely jump for that opportunity.

In conclusion, the interview was completely successful. I am now beginning to strongly consider the possibility of majoring in business operations. Also, James Baumer was a really good guy that took the time out of his day to help me. We had a phone call for over an hour and in that time I not only learned about his job but also himself. He told me what kind of person he is and why his job is perfect for him. His insight in the business industry will surely help me for my career in the future, Therefore, I wrote my letter to James in hope that he truly understand what the interview meant to me. I really believe this phone call may have shaped my life for the better.
