G.O.A.L.S.

To achieve Global Awareness, I plan to study abroad in France during my junior year. Currently, I am enrolled in French 1102.01, which teaches me the French language and culture. I have decided that I will study abroad to become immersed in the language and to experience the French culture in person. I am enthusiastic about working rigorously to learn French, so I can be active and engaged in the French community during study abroad. Specifically, I am interested in OSU’s L’Université Paul Valéry in Montpelier France or IES French Language Program, Nantes. Both programs would help me achieve Global Awareness by teaching the French language and culture.

To achieve Original Inquiry, I plan to engage in honors quality Psychology courses that explore the research and experimental processes essential to contributing to the world of Psychology. I am intrigued by how memory is influenced by biological, cognitive and sociocultural factors. Last year, I completed a research project on the influence of implicit bias on testimonies (memory) in the United States’ Justice System. With the extensive resources available at OSU, I would love to continue my exploration of the topic through a psychological perspective by perusing undergraduate research.

To achieve Academic Enrichment, I will always strive to take Honors quality courses to continue my pursuit of academic excellence. I am majoring in Psychology and Pre-law, because I want to become an active member of my community and help people by improving the Justice System. I believe that understanding the psychology behind human behavior is essential to the Justice System, because it provides insight into the actions of those involved in court cases. I plan for my GE courses to be mostly of Honors quality and to center around learning about how individuals and groups are influenced by various factors. For instance, I am taking Introduction to Folklore, and it has added to my understanding of how culture shapes people in everyday life. Through constant involvement in Honors quality courses that aid in my understanding of human behavior and knowledge, I will become academically prepared for my future as a lawyer.

To achieve Leadership Development, I am involved in clubs that apply to my major and to my areas of interests. I am involved in the Psychology, Social Work, Pets for Vets and the Hunt Seat Club. I will be actively involved and apply for leadership positions in these clubs when the opportunity is presented. Furthermore, I will acquire leadership skills by helping to organize various projects. Personally, I want to become a community leader and develop the ability to easily connect with others. Being a leader in various clubs will prepare me for achieving that goal by allowing me to work with diverse situations. Through participating in clubs, I will grow personally by gaining communication and leadership skills, which will help enhance my professional skills. By engaging in club discussions, I will grow intellectually. As a leader, my style is malleable because I adapt to each person by observing their learning styles and personal needs.

To achieve Service Engagement, I will be long-term committed to my clubs and participate in the service events they organize. I will actively look for opportunities in general that OSU organizes to better the community. For example, I plan to become a part of Buckeyethon. Additionally, Pets for Vets Club helps the community by pairing veterans with service dogs that fit their needs; in a special way, I will be able to study the psychology behind the benefits of service dogs and mental health. I hope to get an internship that would directly involve me in the Columbus community. I would gain leadership skills by taking the initiative to better the community, but personally I feel that it would fulfill my goal to achieve service engagement by allowing me to actively help others in need. I am extremely interested in the Nisonger Center – Social Programs because it combines my interest in legal work (social work) and psychology. It would allow me to help people of all ages in a variety of situations. However, any internship would be an amazing opportunity for me to learn how to help others.
