The Phytochemical & Cardiometabolic Health Laboratory is highly attuned to the clinical implications that nutrition has on human health. The choices and availability of food around us influences the development of chronic diseases and plays a pivotal role in overall health. Our research team works to establish the most up-to-date evidence-based dietary recommendations to improve cardiometabolic health and human healthspan.

We use stable isotopes and targeted metabolomics to assess nutrient bioavailability and establish dietary recommendations and/or requirements for vitamin E and polyphenols. We also routinely conduct human trials and utilize rodent models to establish how phytochemicals/functional foods reduce inflammatory responses along the gut-liver axis that are responsible for obesity-associated nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Our lab also conducts nutrition intervention studies in humans using an ultrasound-based assessment of vascular endothelial function that can predict future cardiovascular complications. More information on what we research can be found in our Research tab.

The Bruno Lab works with various distinguished students who have contributed a great deal to nutritional research and earned various honors on their academic merit. Upon graduation, many of these students have redirected their efforts towards their careers, which has translated into various accomplishments in their successive professional years. A list of our current lab members and alumni can be found under People.
