2021 Ohio Cash Rent and Cropland Value Survey

Please consider participating in our 2021 survey to help us provide better resources to Brown County producers and land owners! Deadline: March 31, 2021.

You can now fill how the typical hard copy survey or complete the survey online at http://go.osu.edu/RentSurvey2021

What are the current cash rental rates and land values for Brown County? This is one of the most common questions I receive throughout the year. However, this is always a very tough question to answer but a very important one for both the landowner and producer. While it may sound simple to give an average, there are so many variables that must be taken into consideration. For example, yield potential and soil types are two major factors that drive the value of agricultural land, but we also need to consider the landowner and producer responsibilities. Are input costs split? How much can the producer afford to pay while still making profit after deducting input costs? How much does the landowner need to charge to cover their taxes or other input costs? There is no right or wrong answer but what is the average method and price?

A lot of questions arise but one-way Ohio State Extension can help gauge the “average” is by administering our Cash Rent Surveys. Each year we offer the opportunity for producers to take this survey. However, this year we have made it easier than ever. You can now fill how the typical hard copy survey or complete the survey online at http://go.osu.edu/RentSurvey2021

You may have used our rent surveys over the years as a decision tool, but you will likely notice there are very few, if any results from our portion of Ohio. If you are a landowner or producer who has knowledge about your rent and cropland values, help us improve this tool for Brown County by taking the survey before March 31, 2021. You can also pick-up hard copies at the Brown County Extension Office. You can also download them on our website at http://brown.osu.edu Hard copy surveys must be returned to our office before March 31, 2021.

Not all questions on the survey may apply to you. You can skip any questions you are uncomfortable answering or do not have accurate answers for. Grain crop and pasture rental rate questions are included in the survey. All survey data will be anonymous and distributed only in a summary format. See last year’s summary at go.osu.edu/RentArchives.

Mental Health First Aid Training Classes Available

OSUE Brown County will be offering four virtual Mental Health First Aid Trainings (MHFA) over the next several months. Two of these will be Adult MHFA and two will be Youth MHFA. These classes are free thanks to the PROSPER grant that OSUE is a part of. Each course requires a pre-registration, is limited in size, and will be filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. Each class also requires a 2-hour, self-paced online class prior to the instructor-led training.

Please see the flier for each date for specific details and the registration link.

Why Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

Why Youth Mental Health First Aid?

Youth Mental Health First Aid has been adapted to be taught virtually. The training teaches adults how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth. This 6.5-hour training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents (ages 6-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

What each course covers:

Each course is designed to cover details and topics for the age group. Both will cover common signs and symptoms of mental illness, common signs and symptoms of substance use, how to interact with someone in crisis, how to connect the person with help. The course will teach you how to apply the ALGEE action plan. See the fliers for additional details.
