Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

G.O.A.L.S. is the advantage that every Honors and Scholars student at The Ohio State University strives to use to make the most of the time and efforts while at school in order to prepare them for a career and a life afterwards. It is an acronym that stands for Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. Below is my plan to fit the G.O.A.L.S. idea.

Global Awareness: I am planning to minor in Spanish, and I feel that this will help to to gain a global perspective. Being from Texas, I have already been able to see the effect that knowing a second language can have on my life, as I am able to create and enrich my relationships with more and more people. But knowing a second language also helps other people with whom I speak too, as they are given a chance to be understood where they might not have been able to otherwise.

Original Inquiry: I have had experience with creating original projects, as I wrote about sports for the school newspaper at my high school. This included watching games, gathering statistics, analyzing them, and writing about everything in a way that my audience would be able to understand. I hope to be able to continue to do this work both while I am in college and also one day as a career. Right now, however, I am able to create original projects as a group with the Ohio State University Marching Band. This is exciting as we strive to be the best as we put on a new show every week. This stretches me out of my comfort zone because we have to learn fast individually and work together as a group to create a show.

Academic Enrichment: I am a Statistics major with a Spanish minor. I chose to major in Statistics because it is the degree that will most help me in my planned future career, which is a scout or data analyst for a sports team. I chose to minor in Spanish in part because I knew the language already, but also because knowing more than one language helps in any career. I strive to achieve excellence in everything I do, and this includes studying hard to get the best grades and education possible.

Leadership Development: I have had many leadership experiences throughout my life as I was both a captain for my varsity swim team in high school, as well as a section leader in the band. I learned a lot about being a leader through these activities, but the most important thing I learned was the best way to lead is to set a good example in the way you do things. I do not have many leadership opportunities right now, as I am a freshman adjusting to a new life in college, however, it is a goal of mine to one day become a squad leader in the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Service Engagement: I have always been involved in service projects as a member of a church in Texas. I hope to continue to take part in service projects throughout my time in college and throughout my life. I enjoy seeing the satisfaction that these projects bring to others, but I also enjoy the way that they make me feel while I am completing them. I love to help others and am hopeful that I will find opportunities to do so while I am here.

Career

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

My name is Phillip Brown. I am a student at THE Ohio State University, where I am planning to major in Statistics with a minor in Spanish. I am originally from Texas, but came to Ohio State to guarantee myself the best education possible, as well as march in The Best Damn Band In The Land. My goal is to one day work as a statistician in the sports entertainment industry, as a scout or a data analyst.
