A Year in Review

I have learned so much from Freshman Year. I came in thinking that I knew who I was when in reality I had no idea. First semester, I had a rude awakening after my first calculus and general chemistry test. Academics wise, I had to relearn how to study and had to really work on my time managements skills. You have to learn self-discipline early in college or else you won’t do as well as you hope. Social life wise, I made some great friends and this was partly due to my morrills scholars program. So, I highly recommend that the first couple of weeks, step out of your comfort zone and really try to meet new people and make connections.  I had to bring out my extroverted side a-lot for the first couple of weeks of school. Also another tip of advice is to network. Networking is key to getting unique positions or just positions that you want. So get to know professors and faculty because they have so many opportunities for students. Although freshman year was a big learning lesson, I enjoyed it alot and can not wait to come back in the fall.

Academic Enrichment

I interviewed Michaela Barker who is a graduating senior that majored in Environmental Public Health pre-med. In our major, there are two different specialties that we can choose to major in. We can either choose Sociology Public Health or Environmental Public Health. Over the course of my freshman year, I have had a hard time figuring out which one to major in. Our interview mostly talked about how she chose her specialty and what she was planning to do after college. She mainly chose environmental because it aligned with her pre-med classes more but she did say that a part of her wishes that she had chose sociology because she was more interested in the social justice aspect of public health. With sociology public health pre med, you would have to take an extra semester to complete all of the course and she did not want to do that. She advised me to pick up a minor that I am really interested in and stick with environmental public health. After we discussed our major, she told me about what she was going to do after college. Right now she is taking a gap year and doing an internship/research with Nationwide hospital. She has already taken the MCAT and will start applying this summer for medical school.

Service Engagement

This year, I had the pleasure to be chosen to be a James Cancer Hospital Volunteer. I volunteered on the 5th floor in the ENT Clinic. I had to clean rooms, restock supplies and help check patients out. During this time, I was also able to interact with some of the doctors and nurses. I volunteered at here every Wednesday for 2 hours. This made me fall even more in love with working in a hospital but unfortunately it did solidify that I do not want to work in the Oncology field. Overall, it was great experience and I am looking forward to volunteering in the Hospital next semester.
