Checkpoint #3: Three Takeaways From This Class

Various forms of Learning Technology

The first takeaway from class is that there are many forms of learning technology that are present that can better help students schedule, plan, and manage their time in a more effective manner. In this course I have been introduced the trello, one note, and study scheduler, which I believe are very useful applications in helping me set reminders for myself , structure notes and other information, and to manage my time more effectively. Throughout high school and my first two years of college, I have struggled at times with managing my time, which led to procrastinating and ultimately cramming for exams. On top of that, I have struggled finding an effective method to better help me manage my time. With that being said, trello and study scheduler have helped me manage my time a lot more effectively this semester, which has helped me see the importance of utilizing apps and different forms of technology that are designed to help students learn more effectively and manage their time.

Importance of Note Taking

The second takeaway from this course is how important it is to take notes. Furthermore, the style and structure in which I take notes is very important too. In the past, I would say that I took very broad and vague notes that lacked structure. This is a problem, because when reviewing for exams and quizzes, it is nearly impossible to retain the information in the notes you take if the said information is unstructured or too cluttered. With that being said, this class introduced me to different note taking strategies such as mind mapping, which revolves around creating visual aids/components into my notes to provide context behind different concepts. Once I started incorporating this strategy into my notes while using applications such as notability and study scheduler, I saw a significant increase in my ability to retain information and my notes began to become more useful when studying.

Utilizing my strengths in order to make me a better learner

The third takeaway from this course is how different students have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the ways in which they learn. Moreover, it is important to take advantage of my learning strengths because they will make me a significantly better student. For example, over the past couple of weeks we have covered different learning styles and personally, I am a visual learner, which means that when taking notes and preparing information for classes, it would be beneficial for me to include different components such as graphs, tables, diagrams, and flowcharts into my notes and preparation material because these are resources that could be beneficial to me as a visual learner.
