Year in Review

Our first scholars outing was at Kuhlwein’s Farm picking pumpkins and going on hay rides. I was very excited for this event and looked forward to it for weeks. However, it did not go as I expected. In fact, I ended up not even attending the event. When the day came, all of the scholars met in the parking lot and divided into cars. I went with 5 other guys from my scholars family.

Almost halfway through the drive, we heard one of the tires on the car pop. No big deal, we thought, we can just pull over and replace the tire and we’ll be on our way. We pulled into a gas station and tried to replace the tire ourselves, but when the spare tire was stuck under the car we ended up having to call AAA. We waited. And waited. And waited. We ended up stuck at the gas station with AAA long after the day at Kuhlwein’s Farm was over and the rest of the scholars were already home.

Of course I was upset that I didn’t get to go to the farm that I had been looking forward to for weeks. However, I still find this day a very fond memory of my first semester at OSU. I never thought eating gas station candy with 5 guys I had only known a couple months in a broken down car for hours would be fun. It was a nice reminder that it’s not always what you’re doing that makes an experience memorable, but rather who you are with. And now we all had shared a crazy experience together that we still talk about today.

Artifacts

My artifact is also one of the reasons why my “day at Kuhlwein’s Farms” was so memorable. That day, I scrolled through Instagram and looked at all of the pictures that were taken at the farm. Yes, this did make me a little upset. I was happy everyone had such a good time, but I wish I could’ve been there to experience it with everyone.

That was when I saw one of my suite mates tagged me in a photo. Confused, I went to see what it was. She had searched through my Instagram page and found a photo of me (not from that day) when I was at a different pumpkin patch and photoshopped it into a group picture everyone in my suite took at the farm. She captioned it “with the crew (minus one)”. I remember how I could not stop laughing when I saw the picture, and I remember how happy it made me.

Honestly, I think that picture made me happier than if I were to actually be there for the real thing, and that is why I chose it to be my artifact. I didn’t need to be there for my friends to think about me. It was that day I realized how close we had all grown in such a short amount of time. I also realized how thankful I was to live with such amazing friends. In the end, we don’t need to be in the same place at the same time to share memorable experiences.

About Me

My name is Sarah Bright, and I am from Columbus, Ohio. I am majoring in Health Sciences and minoring in Developmental Psychology. With this, I hope to continue to graduate school and receive a doctorate in physical therapy. One of my greatest passions is working with kids; I currently work at the Ohio State Child Care Center as a teaching aide. I hope to have the opportunity to continue working with children in my future career. My end goal is to become a physical therapist for children with physical disabilities. I not only decided this because of my passion, but also because of my sister. My sister was born with a condition known as Spina Bifida. Many children with her condition are unable to walk, and the doctors did not believe she would be able to. However, through her physical therapy, she gained this ability and has walked her whole life. In my future career, I want to help children the way my sister was helped.
