Homework #2

Watch The Secret of Drawing 1. After watching the documentary generate a 250-word response. You should include the names of at least three artists/individuals from this list whose work interests you.

As an engineering student, I often do not consider drawing. I see the creative ideas, the work inventing items, and the desire to continually improve. I do not sit and think of how imperative drawing is for all the things that man has created and is creating; I see the thoughts and not the most important step. Every idea that I have had and worked on started with a rough sketch; that goes for every single inventor in history. Watching “The Secret of Drawing” reopened my eyes to how necessary and wonderful drawing is to everyone and everything. Francis Wells using drawing to prepare for delicate surgeries and then using it to pass on all of his knowledge onto others to be able to extend his work. Talking and reading textbooks only go so far on passing knowledge, yet the visual aspect brings in a whole new realm to teaching surgery. In a likewise manner, George Stubbs investing so much time and research into fully learning the anatomy of horses. Having the passion to take a year and a half to study and dissect horse carcasses to be able to draw equines. And was then able to pass on the massive research completed, to veterinarians and further our knowledge. And lastly Leonardo Da Vinci, who studied the human body and who’s wisdom is passed on to doctors today. Da Vinci’s work even impacted Francis Well’s work on the Mitral valve in the heart, the Da Vinci cut, to save people.
