Exercise #3 Making a value chart and other exercises
1. Using a range of pencils to create a 9-step value scale chart with 1” squares.
2. You will then create 4 separate scales using hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and random marks.
3. Next you will draw a sphere. The sphere should be at least 6” wide and have a light source to create: highlights, shadow, reflected light, cast shadow, and background shading.
4. The last exercise will be to draw a cube in perspective using charcoal to give the drawing value and shadow.
Exercise #2 Objects
Choose a group of autobiographical objects, or ones of interest to you, that you will set up as
a still life drawing, using a different hardness of pencils for each.
- Object #1: Burbon
- Object #2: Headphones
- Object #3: Dumbell
- Object #4: Semi-Automatic Pistol
Exercise #1 Blind Contour Drawing and Contour Drawing
Blind Contour
In this project, you will learn how to create “blind” contour line drawings. This means that you will not look at your paper while drawing but keep your eyes focused on the model/object to be drawn. You will use a contour line only and without any shading.
Contour
In the next stage, you are creating contour line drawings by looking at both the model/object and your paper. The drawing methods you learned in the first part now develop into a more conscious practice where you will change the line pressure to correspond to the dark and light edges of the object and to the visual experience of moving in and out of the object. You will work with a continuous line, avoiding any broken contour and sketch marks.
