Year in Review: 2017 (Spring Semester)

Through the first half of 2017 I have accomplished quite a lot. I have been permitted by the University to complete a study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark this summer. This will last 6 weeks and I will complete two courses. These courses are Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism, and a History of the Cold War course. Additionally, I completed and presented my second-year IA project. This project was Comparing and Contrasting US and Russian Government Entities. This project took over 30 hours total and 15 hours in 2017 alone. I am in the process of completing 13 credit hours at Ohio State. Terror & Terrorism, Intro to Homeland Security, Russian Language 2104, and Astronomy are these courses. I have completed my role as serenade chair of my fraternity. This was a success because we were voted by a sorority to be their block partner for next semester’s football season. This sorority is Gamma Phi Beta. In 2017 I have officially declared a second major in Russian Language. This was originally my minor. I will now graduate in the Spring of 2019. I continue to aspire to pursue a graduate degree after my undergraduate. In preparation for this I will begin studying for the LSAT in May.

GOALS Purpose

I joined International Affairs Scholars with the intent to develop my professional and academic skills. Particularly I wanted to develop my understanding of the world around me. G.O.A.L.S. helps define the progression of these skills. I believe I have developed my global awareness by engaging in a variety of events across campus that have discussed a variety of topics. Additionally, my research paper that I have completed during my second year has deeply developed my understanding of Russia in particular. I believe that overall I have a greater grasp of how the International community functions than I had entering the program. I have progressed my experience with Original Inquiry by engaging in my first ever research project. Although it is far from fully professional it has given me the foundation to pursue more serious projects in the future. This initial project has given me the necessary experience to properly grasp the challenges that await me in my future academic and professional career. International Affairs has enabled my to engage in Academic enrichment. The events put on by the International Affairs scholars has exposed me to speakers from both within the University and outside. These speakers are top of the line professionals in their line of work and International Affairs scholars has given me the opportunity to engage academically with these speakers in ways I would not have access to as a non-International Affairs scholar. International Affairs has developed my leadership qualities. Through various service projects completed through the scholars group I have developed vital traits necessary to take on leadership roles in my professional career. Additionally it has enabled me to take on leadership roles in other organizations. It has done so by increasing my confidence in my own ability. As I have just stated, IA has given me greater experience with Service. Various IA events such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service have given me vital experience serving the community. These experiences have helped shape my character and have given me a greater perspective of my own personal life and circumstances. I believe that this is vital to understand in order to be successful in my personal life. In summary I have seen development in all five areas defined through G.O.A.L.S. in the International Affairs scholars group. These developments will serve to my advantage in my academic and professional career. These developments are the result of unique experiences that have been offered to me through the scholars program. Without this outlet, I would not be the same person.

Second Year Project – IA

Research Poster-qhtfu9

In April of 2017 I presented a research project that I had been working on all of the 2016-2017 academic year. The purpose of this project was to compare and contrast US and Russian government entities in order to further understand the way that Russia generally functions. This was completed through the form of a paper. I attended weekly meetings of the Security & Intelligence Club here at Ohio State. At these meetings various speakers from different government organizations came to speak. I listened to their talks and then went home and researched the nearest Russian equivalent. This project took me approximately 30 hours to complete. This project helped me understand the ways of Russia extensively. As a Security & Intelligence and Russian Language double major I find this information extremely pertinent to my academic and career success. I learned extensively about the function and makeup of various Russian entities such as how  security, military, transportation, political,  and religious entities play into Russian life. I presented my findings at the IA Symposium that took place on Wednesday, April 5th, 2017.

Social Committee – Delta Sigma Phi

At the end of 2016 I assumed a position on the Social Committee of Delta Sigma Phi. This is my first position in the Fraternity after I joined in the Autumn of 2016. I hope to hold other positions during my time at Ohio State. Within the social committee I was assigned the position of Serenade Chair. Serenading is something that is typically done by social fraternities within the IFC at Ohio State. I was charged with putting together routines of singing and dancing that we would perform in front of Sororities. This was designed to demonstrate our good will towards those sororities and increase our exposure to them. A primary goal of Serenading was to obtain a block partner for next year’s football season. This semester I put together three different routines that we performed 4 different times to 5 different sororities. These routines involved different songs, different dance moves, and even altered lyrics to make it more applicable to Ohio State Greek life students. At the end of our serenade we were voted by Gamma Phi Beta Sorority to block with for next semester. This was the culmination of hours of hard work that went into planning, rehearsing, and executing these routines. I hope to continue contributing to my Fraternity in the future.

Year in Review: 2016

2016 was a year that I developed my vision for my career as well as the skills it will take to be successful in that Career. I completed my second semester at Ohio State and then engaged myself in a summer internship at a top law firm in the Dallas area. This experience greatly developed my basic skills that will be needed to pursue a future career in law. This experience also helped me develop my vision for my future. I am now certain that I want to attend Law School  after I receive my Degree in Russian Language and International Studies. Additionally, I completed my third semester at Ohio State. I am now nearly complete with all G.E. courses required to graduate, and am getting into the meat and bones of my majors. I rushed a social fraternity which has greatly impacted my leadership, social, and organizational skills. This new experience was out of my comfort zone, but I pushed through and I believe that I am a better person as a result. 2016 has proven to be a critical developmental year for me and I hope to continue this in 2017.

Summer Internship

Over this past summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Dawson & Sodd LLP. This is a law firm in Dallas, Texas which specializes in Eminent Domain law. I worked at the office for about 3 months. While I was working I learned about the basics of law, how it’s practiced, and the general in’s and out’s of writing up formal documentation. I had the privilege to observe meetings with associates, depositions, meetings with opposing counsels, meetings with clients, and even court proceedings. This experience was important to me because it assured me of my interest in pursuing law school after my undergraduate career here at Ohio State.

Joining Delta Sigma Phi

At the beginning of my third semester at Ohio State,  I decided to rush a social fraternity on campus. Joining Delta Sigma Phi has been one of the most positive experiences I have had at University so far. After only being in the organization for a few months, I have already met so many new people and new friends both inside and outside the fraternity. Joining a social fraternity opens up so many opportunities to meet so many new people. I have discovered for myself that when people say Greek life is good for networking; it is honestly true. Additionally, joining Delta Sigma Phi has opened an opportunity to take leadership. During my second semester with the organization, I have taken on the challenge of being a part of the Social Committee. We are in charge of planning and organizing all social events for the fraternity. This is only the first step of many leadership positions I hope to hold in the organization.

Being an Informed Citizen

In my Intro to Intelligence class this Spring Semester, I had to write a research paper about the struggle to balance privacy and safety when it comes to US Intelligence gathering. I had to analyze several different cases that have sparked debate and legislation in the country. What I learned drastically changed my opinion about the methodology the US government goes about in terms of intelligence gathering. What I learned showed that there is much needed attention from the public about the need for more modern and precise legislation that currently lags behind the drive of new technology. This project not only broadened my knowledge about this subject, but it also  heightened my skills in research which will help me with future projects in my college and professional career.

New Perspectives

In my Russian Film class, one of our biggest project was to watch, analyze, and interpret themes of classic soviet films. The film I studied was called the Chekist. It was a film released just after the fall of the Soviet Union, and focused on the crimes against humanity that were committed by the government. The Soviet Union systematically slaughtered those suspected of dissident, their families, and their friends. It was a dramatic piece, created by people who lived the scenario themselves. It was a powerful film that changed my perspective about the importance of global awareness and accountability that we must hold everyone to, and a need to crack down on Government’s that systematically suppress freedom of expression no matter what the political costs might entail. Working on this project really inspired me to pursue a career that has to do with the safeguarding of human rights. The Chekist(1992) <- Link to PowerPoint

Russian Policy

One of my artifacts for the 2015-2016 school year was a project I worked on for my Russian Culture class. In the project I explored the political situation of Russian exploration and exploitation of the Arctic. In the project my group and I looked into the state laws, environmental policy, military policy, and icebreaker fleet. Specifically, I was in charge of researching Russia’s environmental policy and how it was implemented in the country. What I found was that Russia has limited policy in regards to the Arctic. The policies that are in place are out of date and are rarely enforced. The corporations of Northern Russia, primarily Oil & Gas, exercise largely autonomously. I learned that activist groups inside Russia like the GreenPeace Organizations are routinely suppressed by the Russian government. This project taught me to be more aware of rising global issues as they begin to gain greater relevance on a national stage. I learned that global warming has led to significant consequences and a new wave of exploration by major world powers in the region. It has changed my perspective in a sense that this issue may not directly impact the United States now, but it will undoubtedly be an issue of concern in the future.
