Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Global Awareness: When it comes to global awareness I am fully committed to the idea of learning and perpetuating awareness of why it is so important to not just accept but appreciate diversity. It is so exciting and wonderful to be able to meet a new person, and learn about their culture which may be something you have never even heard before. Creating global awareness of our differences also will instil equality, because when everyone is willing to accept others for who they are and where they come from, then we can all have an equal appreciation for everyone as well. To get involved in this I plan to study abroad, hopefully for an entire semester, my junior year; there I will be able to first hand see cultures and ideas in their native places.

Original Inquiry: For this topic, I plan to take a research class that is part of my major. I cannot wait to work side-by-side with a researcher to learn more about certain behaviors of students and how we communicate with one another.

Academic Enrichment: To fulfil an enriched academic career, I plan to take classes that are not just simply required for my major but additionally ones that will challenge me and educate me for my future career once I graduate, providing me possibly with special skills that are not necessarily common amongst communications majors.

Leadership Development: Becoming a leader on the Ohio State campus may not seem like an easy feat, considering its enormous size. However, there are many opportunities to start small in becoming a leader. So I know that I do not need to become student president of the university to make an impact, I can be a positive leader by offering my help to my peers around me. This may be done through tutoring a friend in math, or taking responsibility for a project in Mount or another student organization.

Service Engagement: I plan to remain involved by giving my service through Mount projects as well as seek out outside opportunities to help my local community.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. The novel The Giver was the first book I ever read that sparked my love of reading forever. I read this book in the 5th grade and everything about its plot enticed me. Its storyline was simultaneously intriguing and confusing. Being semi-challenging for a 5th grader, it made me pose questions about its meaning and intentions. I began to wonder what life would be like if I were a character in their setting. This book brought reading to life for me and instilled a love of reading for pleasure. Additionally, because this book made me want to read more, this expanded my knowledge and education to heights I didn’t know existed. To this day I find myself using vocabulary that sometimes puzzles my peers, and I completely accredit my vast lexicon to reading for pleasure – something that would have been impossible without The Giver – ironic how it keeps on giving.

About Me

Hello! My name is Isabel Brandl and I am a first-year at The Ohio State University. I am currently a pre-communications major with plans to be in the communications analysis and practice major. My focus will be based around broadcast production, a field I hope to enter upon graduation. I am a member of the Mount Leadership Society scholars program where I am privileged to be working alongside caring peers as we complete service projects to better impact our community at Ohio State as well as all of Columbus. I have always been passionate about using different forms of communication to spread positivity by being a member of my high school newspaper, as well as using my voice to spread the good word equality. Throughout my remaining time here at OSU, I hope to make memories of friends, my studies and service.
