Year in Review

At the completion of my sophomore year as an undergraduate at Ohio State, I have felt like I learned a great deal in terms of information about my classes, as well as about myself. As a biochemistry major, I completed a difficult year filled with chemistry, including organic chemistry as well as my first semester of biochemistry. To complete this year, I had to challenge and develop the person I am, by prioritizing some aspects of my life over others. My ultimate goal is to become a doctor, and to do so, these difficult chemistry classes are very important to learn. I believe that I did learn a great deal, and that I have put myself in a good place for the future. In addition to my biochemistry major, I decided to gain a minor in astronomy and astrophysics. This is a topic that I have always found extremely interesting, so I am excited to begin work on learning about the topic in the future. Research is another topic that I find very interesting, and I am going to be participating in cancer research beginning next semester. Along with the work in developing my knowledge, I was able to join the club soccer team, which allowed me to meet many people that share values similar to me. The soccer team provided me with the opportunity to grow as a leader, as I was elected to be the team’s risk manager for the next year. I feel like I was able to do a lot over the past year, and if I continue to have semesters like the past few, I think that I will be setting myself up for success in the future.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: In the past two years I have grown a lot in my global awareness. I have taken multiple courses that addressed this topic, with the most influential being my into sociology class. This class allowed me to develop a more open and informed view on society. We discussed many issues involving diversity, stereotypes, and how society is structured. I also have future plans to further grow in my global awareness. Over the past year I participated in STEP, a program that helps students fund projects that can transform the student’s experience at Ohio State. My project involved a trip to Australia and New Zealand, where I will spend lots of time engaging with and learning about their cultures.

Original Inquiry: I have taken many classes that are focused on problem solving and critical thinking. These classes have helped me to expand my capacity for creative thinking that can be used in research. In Chem 1920, my general chemistry class, I participated in a research project that involved learning about a basic perovskite solar cell, and attempting to change the composition to improve it. I found doing research to be interesting, and I decided to join a lab beginning next semester. In the lab, I will be performing cancer research to learn more about the relationship between multiple factors and cancer.

Academic Enrichment: One of my major goals coming into college was to push myself in the classroom to learn a lot about the courses that I take. I chose a biochemistry major because I find the subject very interesting, and I felt like it would prepare me well as a pre-med student. This past semester, I decided to gain an astronomy and astrophysics minor. I did this because I find the material very interesting, and I want to learn more about it.

Leadership Development: Many careers are interested in looking for leaders to hire. Leaders are special because they are able to do things on their own and be successful at what they do. I joined the club soccer team in the fall of 2017. I enjoyed the club, so I wanted to be a leader on the team, so I joined the executive board as the team’s risk manager. In addition to being a leader on the team, I am participating in a leadership development program with the Outdoor Adventure Center this summer. This is the same trip mentioned in the Global Awareness section, which has a focus on leadership development.

Service Engagement: Service is a very important aspect of being a complete student. It shows that you value the community you live in, and that you are willing to give back to society. I plan on volunteering at the hospital in the upcoming semesters. This will allow me to help in an important setting, while gaining experience working in a hospital.
