Year in Review AU17/SP18

  1. Global Awareness

My global awareness has been developing over my sophomore year due mainly to the courses I’ve taken. I recently completed my language requirement by taking German. This series taught me not only about the language of Germany, but also the culture and how it differs from that of the United States. I also took American Identity in the World, a course which centered on the experiences of marginalized groups in America. This course was one of the best I have taken so far at OSU. It gave me a deeper understanding of the obstacles faced by marginalized peoples in our country, and informed me of the value of diversity. We also discussed how the actions of America abroad affect these people.

  1. Original Inquiry

Since last summer I have been a research assistant with Bruce Weinberg in the Department of Economics. This experience has been informative and has given me insight into research that I would not be able to get from a classroom. I am able to see up close the process of creating a research paper, and I have been able to help with this process. In fact, this April I presented a poster at the Denman forum that focused on one of the aspects of my work with Bruce.

  1. Academic Enrichment

My addition of a Math major has given my academic plans more rigor and depth. I originally chose to add my second major as a way to impress graduate schools, but I am not longer positive graduate school is my goal. Regardless, I plan to keep the major, as I enjoy the course work and find it gives my economics major context and provides technical depth that would otherwise be lacking. Additionally, math has opened me up to career opportunities that I did not have before. For example, this summer I am working as an intern in a position that I would not be able to hold without my strong math background.

  1. Leadership Development

This year I developed my leadership skills through my job. I took the lead on a project which required the coordination of two other undergraduates, and I developed a system to organize the data we worked with. This was my first experience as a leader, and I hope to develop this skill further through extracurriculars in the future. I also plan to use this skill during my internship this summer.

  1. Service Engagement

This year I volunteered at Columbus’ local NPR station, WOSU. I answered phones during their winter pledge drive. I am an NPR listener, and I believe my volunteering provides a benefit to our community. While this was only one instance of volunteering, I plan to continue to volunteer at the station during my Junior year. I will also be looking into volunteering as a tutor, since I enjoy teaching.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Global Awareness:

As an economics student, a global outlook is key to success in my major. International trade, currency and capital flows, and even immigration can have a significant effect on a country’s economic position. These issues are not only important for my major, but they are also important to understand our own country and our current political system. To improve my global awareness, I plan to take courses with a focus on trade relations and currency. Outside of class, I would like to study abroad one summer in Germany, to improve my language skills and immerse myself in another culture.

Original Inquiry:

One of the benefits of going to a university like Ohio State is the plethora of research opportunities which are available not only to graduate students, but also to undergraduate students. During my time as a student here, I plan on taking advantage of this in some capacity. I hope to find some topic in my major which would be interesting, but I also have opportunities through my minors, Design and Statistics. The number of opportunities available is truly overwhelming, and I know I will be able to find something that interests me at some point in the next four years.

Academic Enrichment:

When planning my academic career here at OSU, I took into account my professional goals. My current target career is data visualization, hopefully within the news media. Since there is no specific program available for this career, I had to determine what would help me achieve this goal. Economics was an obvious choice for me as I had studied it in high school and found it to be enjoyable. It blends my interests in math and social science, and is highly impactful in our global world. Statistics will help me understand data and be able to interpret it for display. Design is important as it will give me hands on experience with the tools of the job, while providing me with fundamental knowledge for what will be appealing to readers.

Leadership Development:

Leadership is a vital skill for any college graduate to have. The Honors program has a strong focus on developing leadership skills because they know employers look for experience when they consider applicants. Personally, I plan to use internships and clubs to foster leadership skills. There are numerous campus resources to help me find an internship applicable to my field. The Undergraduate Economics Club here on campus is a great opportunity for me to expand my leadership abilities within my area of study.

Service Engagement:

Service is an important part of life as a member of the Columbus community. When I was in high school, I worked at a local hardware store. I plan to apply my knowledge from that job in service projects which involve construction. I also have an interest in politics so I’m looking forward to volunteering for local campaigns during the next election season.

Career

About Me

My name is Augustus Bradley and I am a third year student from Cincinnati, Ohio. I am studying Mathematics and Economics. During the academic year, I work as a research assistant with Dr. Bruce Weinberg in the Department of Economics, assisting him on projects regarding productivity in science. This summer I will be an intern at the Energy Information Agency, an agency of the Department of Energy.
