Extras/Additional Topics

This page will be a collection of “extra” infobits that can be helpful for science- or physics-related instruction.  No particular order on these.

1.  OCIO’s New-And-Improved Resource Site

Just released in late September, 2020, the new site is replacing what used to be ODEE’s resource and documentation site; the team has done quite an overhaul.

The main site can be accessed at http://admin.resources.osu.edu – from here and pick the app or service for which you need more information.

The resource for Office 365 is also a good one to bookmark, as you can drill down into resources specific to those apps and areas.

2.  Carmen Weird Fixes and Potential Workarounds

Things to try if you’re having issues in Carmen…. “your mileage may vary,” but I’m starting to collect these, based on instructor/TA feedback.

3.  Microsoft Teams

Ohio State is definitely all-in on Microsoft Teams.  Separate resource pages under construction.

4.  Mediasite

Mediasite has been a centralized service available to OSU, but we have not particularly “pushed” the use of it within Physics – “yet”…

Due to campus moving away from BuckeyeBox by the end of 2022, you may want to get familiar with this recording management tool for your course(s). (Mediasite content will probably move to its own resource, as we’ll be using it more and more.)

Mike Bierschenk, a member of the Academic Technology team within ASCTech, has prepared a great video tutorial if you need to take a Zoom recording, deal with the caption file and upload to Mediasite for management and future use (such as making your recordings available in a Carmen course).  His tutorial is particularly good, in that he takes you through the steps of managing the transcript along with the video.

5.  OSU Libraries Research Commons Remote Computer Lab

Need a remote computer on which to do your research?  The University Libraries Research Commons remote computer lab could have exactly what you need!

Grad students, postdocs, faculty and staff can reserve a computer with specialized software for almost the entire day (10AM-5PM, Monday through Friday).

Check out the specs and specific software on offer, and submit your request for use by the end of the business day, before the day of your requested reservation. The “Scarlet” pod of computers is specc’ed and configured somewhat differently than the “Grey” pod, and some software is available on all lab computers.

6. Safari Books Online

OSU Libraries maintains a subscription to ProQuest, a/k/a Safari Books Online – a truly fabulous trove of all O’Reilly publications, Microsoft Press books, and thousands of other books on programming, development, project managements, etc.

Access from on-campus (i.e., within the OSU IP address space): http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com/

http://ebooks.ohiolink.edu.proxy.lib.ohio-state.edu/ebc-home/ – may need to provide name.n authentication here ….

(in the pulldown for institution list, select “Not Listed” – this will take you to a login screen where you’ll enter your full email ONLY – no password required)

7.  Digital Unions

The Digital Union locations on campus are an absolute gem for instructional resources.

The DU’s offer everything you need for digital content creation, and can provide tons of support for your instructional efforts.  Software, audio/video studio space, conferencing, large-scale printing and more.

For a complete list of locations and hours, features, and reservations offered, visit the DU website.

8.  OSU Web Accessibility Center

As Ohio State is subject to federal accessibility requirements, you will want to familiarize yourself with policy and resources published on Ohio State’s Web Accessibility Center site.

9.  Copyright Information

Ohio State has extremely good resources on copyright, Creative Commons licensing, and related topics through the Libraries’ Copyright Resource Center and its personnel.  For detailed help, please contact these experts and/or avail yourself of their online resources and workshops.
