Sophomore Year Reflection

My sophomore year was a time filled with change. I started off the year on the normal premed track, planning on graduating with a major in neuroscience and a minor in public health. By the end of the year, I dropped all of my pre-med classes, and replaced them with minors in economics and bioethics. I have a passion for the medical field, that is undeniable, but at this point in my life going into the medical field does not seem to be in the cards for me. In all of my shadowing experiences in high school, I was told that if I could see myself doing anything other than being a doctor, then I should do that instead.

This year, I took classes and had experiences that opening up my eyes to many different fields. I realized just how many different paths I could take throughout college, and how there are many other careers that I could see myself being happy in. This year was a year of broadening horizons. My interests have shifted from individual care on a micro level (medicine) to making progress and helping people on a macro level through research and policy. I am glad I was able to undergo this change of interest when I still have time to explore my options and change my schedule around.

Second semester was especially refreshing, as I felt freed from my prior confining point of view. Going down the pre-med path, it is easy to feel stuck in place. I reached place first semester where I felt stagnant. Second semester I had so many options, and so many exciting opportunities to pursue. This year made me excited about all my future holds, and gave me a recharge that will help to propel me through these next two years.

Vision Statement/Statement of Action

Moving forward in college I have many goals. I have a major in neuroscience and minors in bioethics, public health and economics that I must complete first and foremost. On top of these necessary parts of my college experience, I see myself becoming more involved both on and off of campus. I hope to get involved in more in depth bioethics research and potential write a thesis my senior year. I am also interested in getting involved with public health policy research or getting and internship in a field related to public health. In the next two years of college I see myself becoming more engaged in my community and using the skills I have gained in throughout my first two years to try and make a change. I plan to become more knowledge of the legal system, and look forward to hopefully spending the next two years as the vice president of the Neurolaw Group at OSU. In the next two years I am committed to attending more events and seminars in areas of study that I find interesting. I am determined to raise my GPA while simultaneously taking challenging and stimulating courses. I want to continue to be a face for my major through the duties I perform as a Neuroscience Ambassador, and I hope to work hard enough in order to receive a leadership position my senior year. I have big plans for the next two years, but I know that so long as I keep my head down and stick to the plan I will be able to achieve all of my goals.

Artifact Sophomore Year

This Artifact from my first semester of sophomore year was from the first bioethics class I ever took. I originally enrolled in the class to fill up space because I was unable to get into the public health class I wanted. I turned out to have a passion for bioethics, and for thinking about situations through the lens of ethical conduct. The Artifact I have attached is a few screen shots from my group project where was analyzed how ethical the FDA was in their drug review process. For this project, we developed a “ethical checklist” that we could use to analyze how the FDA handles situations ranging from Tobacco control and regulation, to the potential introduction of marijuana as a nationwide legal substance. We ultimately came to group consensus that although the FDA could act more ethically in an ideal world, they were doing a good job considering their limitations in either resources or funding.

This was not only the first group assignment of my college experience, but it was an assignment that felt applicable to the real world. Organizations that deal with living organisms (especially people) are constantly under the watchful eye of ethic committees. This assignment was very enjoyable, and opened my eyes to the fact that I might have an interest in a career related to ethics. Before taking this class, I had not ever really considered careers in bioethics, but after finishing this project I felt very satisfied with the work I had put in, and realized just how much fun I had thinking about the FDA through an ethical lens. Taking this class made me realize how important it is to keep an open mind, if I had not taken the risk by enrolling in a class outside fo my normal range, I would not have had my eyes opened to a future career path.

Abstract

This e-portfolio contains bits a pieces of my first two years at Ohio State University. I have written about my future goals, and several experiences that have shaped them. My e-portfolio is designed to give some small insights to the evolution of my path throughout college. So much can happen in a semester, so I predominantly focused on capturing a few key moments and expanding on how they impacted me. There is also a section that contains a summary of each year, and the progress I made that year.

First Scholars Event

I was fortunate enough to take part in the Central Ohio State Heart Walk as my first scholars event of the year. I really enjoyed the actual walk, and it was a great way to meet peers who I might have otherwise not interacted with. The Heart Walk was the first fundraising event (of this magnitude) that I have every participated in. Having never experienced something on this scale perviously, I was impressed by how many people came to support the movement. The walk gave me hope that people truly do care about the issues our society/world is facing and are actively working to fix them.

Year in Review

A great deal of time has passed since the first day of the semester. I have grown in immeasurable ways since coming to college. I came from a rather uniform town in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Every day I dealt with the same kinds of people, I rarely encountered individuals who were able to enlightened me on a new aspect of life. I left my home town in hopes of meeting new people that would have a tangible impact on me. The community of Biological Sciences Scholars has been very enriching. I have meet individuals from all walks of life, and I have made wonderful friendships. The people in my scholar’s program have challenged me in the best way possible, and forced me to be a better and more understanding person each and every day. Barrett House is a diverse and culturally rich environment that provokes discussion and sharing. I have learned so much in the short span of a few months. My college experience has finally given me the diversity and world view that I was looking for back home. Scholars has made me a more understanding and compassionate leader, as I now understand more about different cultures and the world in general. I feel more prepared to take on future challenges after having gone through the first semester of the scholar’s program.

Global awareness

My current global awareness has not taken any form other than talking to my fellow biological sciences scholars and other classmates about their culture/background. While this is always an enlightening experience I still believe I need to get out into the world even more. I plan of traveling abroad sometime during my Junior year (if my schedule permits). I love the idea of immersing myself completely in another culture and the growth the results from doing so.

Original Inquiry

This semester I was fortunate enough to receive a go-ahead from Dr. Bruno to shadow in his lab. While I have only been in the lab once it has had quite the impact on me. I greatly enjoyed my time in the lab and I am excited for my next shadowing opportunity.

Academic Enrichment

Each and every day that I walk into my Behavioral Neuroscience class I feel challenged and engaged. It is a class that pushes me to be a better student, a healthier person and a more aware human being. While this may be the only class that I have this semester that pushes me to such lengths, I am well aware that as the semesters pass I will only have more of those impactful classes.

Leadership Development

While I try and be a leader in everything that I do, I find that it is best to focus my efforts on one or two choice clubs/events in order to truly have an impact. I am currently a part of the Maker Club at OSU, and I plan on being very engaged in the hopes of acquiring a leadership position. I also plan on applying to the neuroscience ambassador program so that I may represent my major to incoming freshmen.

Service Engagement

Starting out on the Pre-Med track in college, it is expected that community service will take up a decent portion of my time. I have always loved service, so I never found it difficult to help others. In college however, I am having difficulty figuring out how I will balance all of my various time commitments in order to fit in volunteering. I plan on figuring out when and where I will be able to volunteer in order maximize my impact on the community.

Artifacts

rat-pre-cut

I recently was given the “green light” by Dr. Bruno (the department chair of the psychology department) to work in his lab next semester. I am currently in a trial period in his lab where periodically I will follow around various third and fourth years in his lab to learn the ropes. On Wednesday October 12th I had my first shadowing experience in the lab. I started off my morning at 10:00 and ended at around 1:00. In a mere three hours I witnessed the insertion of a micro-dialysis probe into the brain of a rat, the habituation of a rat before testing, and the procedure for building bio sensors. This was both a delighting and highly confusing experience.

I started thinking about the medical field in sixth grade. Up until the summer before I came to OSU medicine was the only option.  This past summer I started thinking more about the idea of pursuing a doctorate in neuroscience. Since then, I have been swinging back and forth between the idea of an MD or a PhD. My experience on Wednesday further complicates things. I have now had positive and exciting experiences in both the field of neuroscience and the field of medicine. I want to take this experience and my passions in life forward and use them to attempt to make sense of these dreams that I have in my head.
