FinalReviewBlog

I have learned all sorts of things about technology . I have learned about new resources such as Quizlet, Schedulizer, and Duolingo . These educational websites have helped me to expand my mind and learn more than I could otherwise and in surprisingly easy ways . I have created a blog and learned how to use it in different ways . I also learned about different ways to find information on the internet. A few include using google tips such as using quotes or addition and subtraction signs in the google search bar. Another is to use the OSU library website in order to find textsonline or in a library near you . Learning to cite different resources is an important tool as well .

I have learned that I procrastinate but I think that I learn from my experiences. I definitely do not want to do poorly in class and disappoint myself and my family so I AM motivated even though I sometimes feel as if none of my work is important . I have also learned that I like to work with others in study groups in order to get more out of my lectures . Lastly I have also taken the test on how I learn . I found out that I can learn in most ways although when I find a subject boring or the lecturer does not involve the class or have high expectations that I do not do as well as I would like .

I think that my most meaningful experience is making my google schedule . It was amazing to see the differences between what I thought I did and what actually happened. I have a lot more time than I thought and I think I am not using it as productively as possible . I think I can really see improvement opportunities in my daily schedule where I could be studying more completing my homework earlier in the week so I won’t be cramming for quizzes or even finals .

I plan to get a big calendar that I can hang on my wall and update all of the time . This will make it easier for me to remember what I need to get done and it will be harder for me to go to sleep with an incomplete day on my calendar . I think it could help to turn my educational procrastination around so that I will hopefully have more free days and fewer cram sessions .  Something else I want to change is where I am completing my work. I think that the environment at home is not as conducive to learning and studying since my house has so many distractions around such as my television and computer . Working in a school or learning environment such as the library more often would be a lot more helpful in getting my work done earlier and actually studying when I need to . I am very glad that I took this class because I think it will help me reach my goals in the future and that is really the best thing anyone can do for you.

Web-Enhanced Listening & Viewing Strategies Blog Post

I know a lot of you have trouble paying attention in class during lectures so I’m here to give you a few tips to make lecture more interestin and keep you involved in your education.

To start is a list of things to think about when you are listening to anything:

What are you meant to get out of the lecture (the objectives)

Predict what will come next in the lecture

Ask questions

Write down the key points

If you still cannot understand what is going on in class or have a question during lecture, go online as well. Try to find a website which will answer your questions or look for videos that will keep your interest and still teach you the information. When you watch these videos you will still need to be an active listener. So continue to take notes and ask questions. While you may think you will remember all of the information now, writing an outline or key points will help you to remember. Notes and asking questions now will speed things up when final exams come around and you find you cannot remember or understand a certain subject. Notes may also act as cues later on while you are studying.

Good Luck!

Video Post

This video teaches you the basics of sound, hearing, and sound waves. If you change pitch then the sound wave will change frequency.  Walls will absorb high frequencies of sound waves and allow lower waves to pass through. Hearing happens when your eardrum vibrates the tiny bones in your ear. These then send the vibrations to a liquid. This in turn moves some hairs and sends the message to your brain.

Okay what I like about this video is not only the cute British boy (don’t pretend you didn’t notice) but also the way that he portrays the information. He uses song which is great because it is catchy, keeps your attention, and while it does not cover everything it could act as a cue during a test. The video keeps your attention, this is important because if you are bored or looking away then you will not get the same experience and you will forget the information more easily. A second reason this video is great is that it teaches you. This is important because this video is worthless and a waste of time if you do not learn something while you watch. I know that I learned a lot from this video such as that walls absorb high frequencies of sound (who knew?!) that I didn’t know before and this is my favorite way to learn.

Online Reading

The chapter we read this week in Esepsy was about reading online and engaging in studying on my own time. I sure wish that I had had this book at the beginning of this semester. College is very different from High School. Here we need to learn outside of the classroom, not only in this online based class but in many of my other classes as well. It seems to be taking a while for me to get used to this new way of studying.

Some tips I have for those of you starting college is that you need to set a goal such as a GPA and realize that you will need to work for it.

Now follow through. Create a study group and make a schedule or plan time for studying and reaching your goal. Everybody learns differently so you can find a way to make your studying your own. If something is not working then change it. Figure out the ways that you learn best and take advantage of it whether that is by reading, creating flashcards, or going to a tutor every day.

DO THE READINGS. This is the ultimate. You will not get anywhere if you take one look at that humongous, 5-ton, important  textbook and go out to party instead. And do not just read it to say you did it. This is about comprehension, not effort. Try highlighting key words and important themes or theories whether you are online or using a real book, this is key. Take notes, make an outline, or summarize each chapter after you read it. If you still don’t understand, ask for help.

Everybody has office hours and there is always someone there to turn to at OSU. You just need to find them.

Good luck in classes,
