For my Green Engineering Scholars, we did a project pertaining to sustainability and green technology. My group and I chose to research producing crude oil from algae. In our research, we found that scientists were able to convert the algae into oil in just one hour. Usually, this process takes millions of years to complete. The oil from algae also burns cleaner than regular oil. It could also be cheaper in the future. A main reason that this method of oil extraction is not relied on is due to a lack of proper technology for mass production. Scientists hope that by 2025, this method will be more wide spread. My group and I found this incredibly interesting and amazing that science was able to speed up this process so greatly. We look forward to watching this technology evolve to better sustain the world’s growing energy needs.
