Calling Off & Missing Work

Hello all,

We really haven’t had problems with attendance this Fall–thank you!–but I thought it might be good to clarify what the library’s policy is for calling off work.

Just like with any other workplace, the two acceptable reasons for calling off work are 1) Sick or  2) Emergency (this is less common)

  • If you need to call in sick (or with an emergency), make sure you actually call in and talk to someone (no email) before you’re scheduled to work. The sooner you can let us know the better–especially if we need to find someone to your shift.
  • You do not need to find a replacement for your shift.
  • Like any other workplace, missing work occasionally due to illness is not a major concern.  For instance, if you’re throwing up–no one will expect you to come in (please don’t!). With that said, we don’t want to see workers calling off  on a regular basis either. If a worker abuses the system, that behavior could warrant a warning from the supervisor or even dismissal depending upon the circumstances.

Now occasionally there might be a time when you want to miss a scheduled shift because of school or other obligations/issues/etc. Technically, these are not good reasons to call off with short notice. The reason being, the library relies heavily on students to help us complete our day-to-day tasks. When someone calls off  and we don’t have enough notice to adjust the schedule, it makes a difference.

With that said, it is possible to change your schedule for things that come up, especially for school related reasons. So if you think you might need to miss a shift, we would just like you to plan ahead of time so the library’s work isn’t disrupted.

  • If you think you’ll need to miss a shift, talk to me ASAP.
  • Look for a replacement to work your shift. Contact your fellow workers (via email or phone) to see if they would like to work your shift (or trade).
  • Note: If you need contact information for the other student workers in our department, just let me know.

A note on FINALS WEEK:

Often time during finals, students need time off to study (this is okay). If you think this will be the case, just let me know when the time gets closer. I’ll send out a reminder as well.

If you have any questions, as always, please ask!

A Couple Things

Hello all,

Just a couple things this week:

1) The stylus for the DLA is missing, so keep your eyes open. It disappeared sometime between the end of last week and the first of this week.

2) Remember to record technology and reference questions (it’s important!)

3) A few tips on keeping the stacks looking nice:

  • Mind the gaps: When you pull books make sure to push the book ends in to close any gaps

Shelf gap

  • Straighten up: If you see any funky looking shelves, please take the time to straighten them

Bad shelf (gappy and messy)

  • Be up front: The books look best when they’re shelved even (flush) with the edge of the shelf

Good Shelf (nice n’ even)

That is all…have a nice day!
