Global Awareness

Taking classes that explore different cultures and places is just scratching the surface of what students can do to develop global awareness at OSU. Interacting with students from different places and backgrounds has really helped me grow. I have friends that are children of immigrants, and even immigrants themselves. I love the multitude of cultural events that happen at OSU, like Taste of OSU. I was a founding member of OSU’s Romanian Club, and even though it’s still small, I love going every week and learning more and more about a culture I would have had very little exposure to otherwise. I hope to continue meeting people and exploring new ideas throughout my time at OSU and beyond. My dream would be to travel somewhere outside the US, which I’ve never really done.

Original Inquiry

As a Pre-Vet student, I have to take a lot of challenging science courses. I actually had to learn how to study, and for someone like me, that’s a challenge. I have to find creative ways to not get bored while still focusing on absorbing information. I also noticed in my first semester that when I had too much free time, I tended to get off track with school work and spend too much time with friends. I got a job at a research facility to earn some money and spend time doing something more productive. Being a research assistant exposes you to so much knowledge and creativity. Watching and assisting in important research that could even pertain to the field I’m working toward entering could be a huge advantage in growing my abilities.

Academic Enrichment

While many pre-vet students drift toward animal science, I chose biology, which is considerably more challenging. Instead of focusing on my GPA, I want to actually learn the difficult and complex science that goes into being a medical professional. There’s no reason a pre-vet student should be taking any less of a rigorous schedule than a pre-med student. Honors courses can help set me ahead as well. Many honors and embedded versions of science classes have the students working at a much higher level than would normally be expected of them. I’ve learned to work hard and go above and beyond my original abilities in these classes, which can only help my studies and make me more competitive as an applicant for vet school.

Leadership Development

I am involved in multiple animal-based clubs like Zoology and Pre-Vet. I have also participated in Women in Math and Science and Romanian Club. Clubs have allowed me to connect with others I might normally not have and to explore leadership. Pre-Vet club puts me directly in contact with learning and networking opportunities with currently practicing veterinarians. Zoology club helps to give me a different outlook on working with animals. I am hoping to run for a board position in Zoology club. I have made friends there who have noticed how much I enjoy the club and have pushed me to run for an officer position. Hopefully, the position can kick-start a new journey for me as I continue to learn and grow.

Service Engagement

Service, especially in your own community, is something I consider very important. I am a constant volunteer at the Franklin County Dog Shelter, and I’m hoping to continue volunteering at shelters back home when on break from school. I have participated in the OSU organized service days like Community Commitment a few times and they are something I really enjoy and will continue to try and attend. For a veterinarian, public health is a huge part of the job and I want to be able to help anyone, anywhere and I am looking into volunteering my services with emergency responder groups in my home town that work with and help animals affected.
