Columbus Adventure with Peer Leader Group

Location: Chop Shop

Members: All present

Description: For this Columbus Adventure activity, our group decided to go to Chop Shop.  This was my first time eating there.  The food there was very good and service was fast.  The restaurant was very open and had an inviting atmosphere that made the experience more enjoyable.

Lessons Learned: From this activity, I not only was able to talk to my peer group and learn more about them, but also was able to learn more about Columbus.  Even though this restaurant is located close to Drackett Tower, I had never been.  By doing activities like this and trying new things in Columbus, I am gaining more and more knowledge about the city, which makes it feel more like a second home.  I would definitely go back and would recommend to another person.  The food was good, service was fast, and the atmosphere was inviting.

Columbus To-Do #2 & #3

Activity 2: Jeni’s Ice Cream

The Jeni’s location that we went to was in the Short North.  Inside, the service was quick, and the atmosphere of the place was open and inviting.  Needless to say, the ice cream was very good.  Overall, I enjoyed the experience and would definitely come back.  To anyone considering to go as well, I would definitely recommend.

Activity 3: Junior’s Tacos Food Truck

This food truck was located on 5th Avenue near High Street.  For this activity, I was recommended to try the food by a friend who had recently gone there.  Though it was a little cold outside when I went, the owner was very nice and the food was authentic and delicious.  Overall, I enjoyed this experience as well and would definitely go back for some good, authentic Mexican food.  To anyone considering to go as well, I would definitely recommend for the same reasons.

General Questions

  1. Favorite experience from this project?
    • My favorite experience from this project was Eden Burger (Activity #1).  Though Jeni’s and the food truck were also very good, Eden Burger was a unique experience.  I’ve had Mexican food before and ice cream, but I had never had a vegetarian burger.  This, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is why it is my favorite of all three of the experiences.
  2. What did you learn about Columbus?
    • The main thing that I learned about Columbus from this was the variety of places here.  There are so many unique food/dessert places to go that are unique to Columbus.  Additionally, since I had to leave campus, I was forced to learn and use the COTA buses, which I found very useful.  Knowledge and comfortability with the bus system is something that will help me for the rest of my time here.
  3. Has this led you to want to explore other things about the city?
    • Yes. After experiencing unique food/dessert experiences, I am definitely encouraged to go check out more local restaurants.
  4. What might you recommend for someone endeavoring to complete the same project?
    • I would highly recommend this project.  All three experiences were enjoyable, tasty, and unique.  Learning about and finding out about what places are good spots to eat or get dessert can never be a bad thing either.

Columbus To-Do List #1

  • Which list are you choosing from?
    • Me and my roommates (also HES) chose the Theme list, specifically the food section.
  • What you are most looking forward to upon that choice?
    • I am most looking forward to beginning to explore Columbus in an area not far from campus. I do, however, plan to venture further out into the city down the road. But first, I want to familiarize myself with what’s around campus (within ~2 miles).  And also, of course, since I’m choosing the food section, I also look forward to having some delicious local food.
  • What you hope to get out of this assignment this semester?
    • What I am hoping most to get out of this assignment during this semester is becoming more familiar with my new home, whether it be through food, entertainment, music, etc.
  • At least one experience* you have had so far?
    • One experience I have had so far happened very early on, prior to the normal move-in day.  Me and a group of a couple other OWLs and HES students from my floor went out on the second night on campus and walked all the way to Jeni’s Ice Cream in the Short North.  This experience was really cool because I got to begin to see Columbus for the first time, spend time with my floor-mates, and have some very good ice cream.

Columbus To-Do Activity #1: Eden Burger (local restaurant)

  • A photo of the experience or location

  • A brief description of your experience—favorite things, confusing things, what you learned etc.
    • Eden Burger is a vegan restaurant that serves vegan burgers.  I was somewhat skeptical because I like meat burgers, but I have to admit that the food was very good.  The restaurant was small on the inside but had a quaint feeling and relaxed atmosphere.  This and the food made the experience very enjoyable.
  • Would you go back and/or recommend it to a friend?
    • Yes, I would definitely go back and recommend it to friends.  Its not too far from campus, is right along High Street on one of the COTA Bus lines, and has really good food and a warm atmosphere.  10/10!

Artifacts

Artifact #1 (High School) – La Salle HS Key Club Service Medal and Chord

The first artifact I chose – my Key Club Service Medal and Chord – is representative of all my experiences as a part of the Key Club (community service organization) in high school.  After four years of being a member and two years as an officer and President of the club, I was changed as a person by my experiences, and I had racked up 200+ service hours, earning service medals and a Key Club chord at graduation. This experience was not only enjoyable, but also gave me perspective on the conditions of other people, often the less fortunate.  I realized, through my experiences, the impact that such a small act of service, such as having a conversation with clientele at a homeless shelter in downtown Cincinnati, can have.  My experiences through Key Club were also the reason I wanted to join the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars program; because its emphasis on service-based learning.

Artifact #2 (Autumn Semester 2017) – My Backpack

The second artifact I chose – My Backpack – is representative of what I’ve spent a lot of time and effort on so far this semester.  Though I am enjoying the social side of college and having fun with my friends, my schoolwork comes first and has taken precedence this semester.  As the semester has continued, my classes have gotten progressively harder and I’ve likewise had to dedicate more time to them, which is why I chose this as my second artifact.

About Me

My name is Joshua Biery, and I am a first-year student from Cincinnati, Ohio at the Ohio State University studying Aerospace Engineering. I am also a member of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars program, which is dedicated to both academic excellence and positive community influence and action.

Prior to coming to Ohio State, I was a student of La Salle High School in my hometown of Cincinnati. During high school, I was able to discover and begin to hone my interests and skills through rigorous honors and AP courses as well as extracurricular involvement. As such, I have developed problem-solving and critical thinking skills along with creativity. Through my leadership roles in the Lasallian Scholars Institute, Key Club, and French Club in high school, I developed a stronger character; a character of compassion and responsibility.  It was also through this involvement in community and academics that I began to significantly develop as a strong leader in service and in other capacities. Combining these acquired skills and my leadership aptitude with my work ethic has sculpted me into the student and leader that I am today.

Now as I begin a new chapter in my life, I plan to become just as involved, if not more involved, in the community at Ohio State through academics as well as extracurricular activities and leadership so as to foster further development of my character and to hone my skills even further.  I challenge myself to achieve higher than I have before, to develop into an even more successful student and professional, and to start my professional career as an engineer.

About-Me #2

My Strengths:

  1. Strategic: I connect very well with this strength because I am very strategic in my approach to finding solutions. I want to make sure I am choosing the correct path. I think that this strength is coupled with my analytical strength.
  2. Learner: I connect very well with this strength because I love to learn.  I am always seeking out new knowledge. In high school, I took AP electives to learn. Also, I’ll also watch informative or interesting videos on YouTube.
  3. Achiever: I connect with this strength really well, too because I am a perfectionist.  I am always trying to perfect what I do and make sure that what I do is done to the best of my ability. This drive is what gives me the achiever strength.
  4. Individualization: I connect with this theme because I am intrigued by people.  Through working community service at a local homeless shelter in downtown Cincinnati in high school, I grew an appreciation for all types of people.  I believe that this service in high school is why I now have the individualization strength.
  5. Analytical: I connect very well with this strength because I am a very analytical thinker.  I usually tend to approach problems with an analytical approach rather than an emotional one.
