Second Semester (First Year)

Freshman year at OSU was very eventful, especially the second semester. The last semester was not as hectic as expected which allowed me to focus more on studying and giving me more time to catch up on homework and participate in volunteering opportunities. My goal for the second semester were to do better in my classes by changing my study habits and this is exactly what I did throughout the semester. I paid more attention during class and took more notes. Thus, I was able to review ahead of time and have plenty of time to study for exams.

Year in Review

The first semester of college was very interesting for me. It gave me a good perspective on who I am as a college student. In high school, I was a very laid back student because I did not have to work hard at all to get A’s, but this semester, I learned that I needed to work much harder to get good grades. By working harder, I learned that I needed to work on my time management skills and my organizational skills to excel in my courses. By doing so, I had to change to my work habits. Instead of procrastinating on assignments, I completed them two to three days ahead of the scheduled due date so that I could work ahead and not stress about the assignments. One of the most difficult parts of the transition from high school to college was the amount of work load that was given to us in one week. This was one of the most difficult parts for me because in high school, the teachers would stretch out the time because it was possible, however, in college, all the work was given to us and was expected to be completed within a week’s time, which was a little overwhelming for me at first but I soon was able to manage my time and work more efficiently. All of my professors that I spoke to told me that one of the best ways to do well next semester was to take efficient and clear notes before the lecture so that I was prepared ahead of time and would only need to take notes that were out of the norm. I will use this tip in biology and chemistry, as I am taking that next semester. Overall, I would say that this semester was a great introduction to the college life and that I have definitely changed for the better from high school.

Global Awareness: I hope to participate in various activities and join a club that will give me more exposure to the community around campus. By participating in scholarly events I was able to meet several students and make many friends that happened to be in the same classes as me as well in the same scholars program.
Original Inquiry: Research is very important to have on your resume. As I am pre-med student, research is a very key component to be accepted into medical school. By being a part of the Biological sciences scholars program, there are plenty of research opportunities available. I have applied to various research and internships throughout campus, however, I need more experience and higher level course to be chosen to do the respective research.
Academic Enrichment: Taking challenging courses is key to developing yourself mentally. One of my most challenging classes is Chemistry. By taking higher level courses in the Chemistry department, I will be able to excel in various other classes by implementing the study habits used for Chemistry.
Leadership Development: By participating in the classroom and answering questions, I am able to learn more and even help others around me. Leadership is a very important skill, not only while having study session with classmates, but also during group discussions or in career environment.
Service Engagement: Volunteering around campus is a great way to expose yourself to the community and the people around you. By volunteering in FLOW (tree planting), I was able to meet several people that I am still in touch with.
