Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

While neither the major or minor I’m pursuing directly deal with global awareness, I feel there are plenty of opportunities for me to learn about different cultures. This can be done through study abroad programs. Specifically, I know there is a genetics program in Norway that I’m interested in. I can also increase my global awareness by taking advantage of general education requirements that deal with different cultures. I’m interested in taking a course on Chinese history.

Academic Enrichment:

Currently, I plan on pursuing a career in molecular genetics, preferably research. To do achieve this goal, I plan on taking many upper level genetics courses, and maybe some plant genetics courses, depending on what I find specifically interesting. I’m also planning on pursuing a business minor in case I decide to go into the private sector or choose a role in management.

Original Inquiry:

Since I plan on doing research for a career later, I’m currently working in a molecular genetics laboratory under Dr. Mark Seeger. The current research deals with identifying different proteins that interact with the products of the commissureless family of genes. I plan on expanding my work in original inquiry and eventually come up with my own project.

Leadership Development:

I am currently in the Courageous Leader Program that is held by the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. It focuses on building leadership and communication skills. I also plan on joining a fraternity and take some form of leadership during my time at OSU. I also have the opportunity to take a leadership role in the lab I’m currently working in.

Service Engagement:

As for service engagement, I’ve always had interest in mental health. Since mental health problems is something I’ve dealt with for a while, I want to help people who have had similar problems as me. While I’m not currently doing any service, a fraternity I’m currently looking at engages in philanthropy that deals with mental health. I’m also considering joining the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements.
