Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

As an Honors and Scholars student, I must reach my own personal goals along with the G.O.A.L.S. set in place by the Honors program! I’m excited to pursue each part of the G.O.A.L.S. and exceed the standards of the Honors college.

G is for Global Awareness. In order to fulfill the Global Awareness aspect, I am taking Italian and speaking daily with my grandparents who are native Italian speakers! I also plan to do a study abroad. I am currently interested in going to Antarctica or somewhere in South America. I truly believe traveling and experiencing other cultures is the best way to become globally aware.

O is for Original Inquiry. As an undergraduate, I know it can be hard to find impressive research positions. I plan to start small, like be a lab assistant, and establish relationships with professors who are running labs. I am going to research labs doing research on either microbiology, environmental sciences, or geology. Since those are my areas of interest, I believe that I can bring a true passion to the lab and actual enjoy the work I do, even if it is just a small job. Another idea I have for original inquiry is to get into some kind of visual arts project. I would love to write a play and see it performed in a small setting. I am a huge fan of the sciences, but I believe that the arts are also a crucial part of our society.

A is for Academic Enrichment. All through high school I took AP and honors classes. Even as a senior, I didn’t slack off. I have always committed myself to taking classes that challenge me and teach me how much hard work pays off. As I headed into college, I planned to do the exact same thing. When considering GEs, I always check if there is an honors course I could take instead, but I don’t sacrifice my interests just to be an honors student. Since I am a biology major, I plan on taking 1400 instead of 1300 so I can challenge myself in the field I would like to go into. I currently am planning to be a math minor, too, so that I can set myself apart as I apply to medical schools. I know that mathematics is hard, which is why I enjoy it so much.

L is for Leadership Development. I am currently involved in a few clubs. I am a part of Project Heal, a club about eating disorder awareness, recycling club, and the OSU Pink Out. My involvement at the moment is just becoming familiar with the organizations so that maybe in a year or two, I can become a leader of one of them. I would love to be on the executive board for Project Heal. I also plan on rushing a sorority in the spring. All of these organizations relate to aspects of life that I am very passionate about and through that passion, I hope to show people what can be accomplished and become a leader. I lead a lot with my heart. I think it is important to truly care about what you’re doing, the people you’re doing it with, and how it will influence people to do the same.

S is for Service Engagement. Throughout high school, I was a volunteer children’s soccer coach which taught me a lot about child development, child care, and patience. I hope to continue this work when I go home over the summers the next four years. This kind of service helps to spread joy to the children and has always shown me how powerful teachers are on students. I have also volunteered at soup kitchens and I often donate blood when I am allowed. I see it as my duty as someone who has been fortunate to not have to suffer to help those who aren’t as lucky. I plan on finding local soup kitchens to volunteer at, along with probably an animal shelter because I have a lot of love for animals.

Career

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. About Me

Hello, I am Francesca Beuger! I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but I have found my way to Ohio. I’m a first year undergraduate at the Ohio State University. My major is biology with a mathematics minor on a pre-medical or pre-veterinary track. I have always had a love of science but when I am not in school, I enjoy volunteering my free time, staying active, and doing Student Government. I’m very excited to explore Columbus because traveling and exploration is a passion of mine. I am hoping to do research in the medical field while I study at OSU.
