Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

When first visiting Ohio State University, the amount of opportunities held before me overwhelmed me. However, knowing my determination for opportunities to better my future, as well as for academic value, I knew that the Honors and Scholars program was something I wanted to pursue. I believe through my academic success, as well as my involvement with real world situations, I would make a great candidate for this honorable program.

When learning about the Honors and Scholars program for the first time, I came to realize that the experiences and knowledge that I could obtain through studying abroad was too valuable to pass up. Studying abroad allows students to become cognitively aware of the culture and social issues of foreign nations. From learning of a passion for cultural differences in university level spanish courses, I have already achieved part of this program’s goal of global awareness. However, if given the opportunity to study abroad, I will obtain first hand experience of such cultural differences. This, in turn, can be valuable to my goals of pursuing an international business degree or an international marketing degree, as well as a minor in Spanish.

Upon learning about the intentions of the Honors and Scholars program, I had never realized how important involving myself in community affairs was to my success. Ohio State has an exceptional way of creating a sense of belonging and engagement in its students through their goal of service engagement. Service engagement ultimately allows students to give back to their community by addressing social issues of particular concern. Because of my involvement in National Honors Society in high school, I already know what it means to give back to a community, and believe that I can be effective in giving to the Columbus area. Communal service also would allow me to not only create personal relationships with those who I would serve with, but with those who I would serve for. As a member of a marketing management career program in high school, I have learned that personal connections can go a long way in contributing to the achievement of goals. Through service, I will encounter a variety of people with a variety of experiences in my career. This ultimately may lead to progress towards my business degree, as well as future success following my collegiate career.

Ohio State’s Honors and Scholars program has a vast amount of opportunities that can lead anyone to success in their future goals. I believe as a business major that this program can benefit me. In return, I can provide much of my time, knowledge, and determination to help achieve the university’s’ goals as well. This, in addition to my academic achievements and real world experience, is why I would be a strong candidate for the Honors and Scholars program. All I need is for the program to have faith in me in order to direct the experience toward my success.

About Me

My name is Tyler Best, and I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in international business with a minor in Spanish. I am from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, which is the city immediately north of Akron. I decided to pursue a degree in international business and in Spanish because I would love to have the opportunity to work around the world, and to experience different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Long distance running is my greatest passion, and it would be a dream come true to be able to work on a global scale for USA Track and Field. I also enjoy learning about the business world, especially the unique marketing projects that large marketing firms create. My goals are to be a successful businessman, who works with international clients, and enjoys their job.
