Year in Review: 2015-2016

This past year at The Ohio State University has been a tough learning experience. I learned how I really should be studying, that it is better to open up to people, and that the best way to succeed to to believe in yourself and your abilities.

My first semester, I did not do as well as I had hope to do. Even though I did not fail any classes, I still wished to have done better. It was an eye opening experience to say the least. I realized that I was not truly believing in myself and my capabilities. I was not as involved as I had originally planned and was very upset about that.

However, I can say that my 2nd semester was a great improvement. I developed a greater bond with the people in my dorm and have gained friends that I feel I will keep even after graduating. I have began to become more involved by obtaining an office assistant position and be becoming committee co-chair for my Stadium Scholars Program. Not only that, I feel that I am improving in my grades so far.

Even though the year as not fully come to a close and with finals looming in the distance, I feel that my first year at this university has been a great experience and I can’t wait to see what future years here have for me.

This picture is extremely important to me because it represents some of the amazing people that I have met since coming to this large university.

Because Ohio State is extremely far from my hometown, around 10 hours to be exact, I was very nervous about meeting new people and making more friends. However, I soon realized that the best people that I would meet would be right on my floor in my dorm. Now only have I opened up to these people, but I know that throughout the years, we will maintain a very close friendship.

Without these friends, I know that my first year here would have been extremely hard. Through all of the hard classes, tests, and personal issues that I have experienced my first year, they have been there right by my side, and I know that I will be able to count on them forever.

S: Service Engagement

Being apart of the Stadium Scholars Program, you are required to obtain at least 6 community service events and being a part of the Biological Sciences Scholars Program, you need to have a minimum of 10 community service hours. Because of these requirements and my dedication to helping better serve my community, I have be actively engaged in achieving these requirements and going over what is needed.

Some of the major events that I have participated in during my freshman year here at The Ohio State University have been Community Commitment, BuckeyeThon, and MLK Day Of Service. Between these 3 events, I have served about 20 hours of community service. Not only these, but I have also made shoes for children in third world countries, capes for children with pediatric cancers, and cleaning up an elementary school’s playground.

Helping the community is a very important job for me because the better the world is, the better that less people have to worry about not being to survive. If more people would donate their time to this, the world could become a much better place.

L: Leadership Development

Being a leader is extremely important to me especially because it will be a key ascot of any future career I will have in medicine. While in high school, I was the designated leader of my political debate team which required me to assign roles to my group such as who would be the designated speaker and write. While on my lacrosse team my senior year, I took up the leadership position to better help the incoming rookies better their lacrosse skills and was often seen during practicing giving them tips on how to cradle better or pass/catch better.

However, since beginning of my time here at The Ohio State University, my role as a leader has been not as explicit, however, I have tried to better this. Because I am also apart of The Stadium Scholars Program where we have designated committees, I was chosen to become co-chair of the Recognition Committee, where we hold birthday parties each month to celebrate the members’ of this program’s birthday and also hold study sessions for the scholars. Since being chosen for this role, me and my other co-chairs have designed new events that could better build the community aspect of this program.

Being a leader is an extremely important role that I hope to better develop as my time here at Ohio State continues and I know will become better.

A: Academic Enrichment

To obtain academic enrichment, one must challenge themselves academically both in and out of the classroom. In other words, you have to be able to take risks and not stick to your comfort zone. As a Honors and Scholars student, obtaining academic enrichment is extremely important to me because I will need to challenge myself in order to obtain the strongest grades possible for me to be able to attend Physicians Assistant school after graduation. In order for me to complete this goal, I will have to take the courses that get the most hatred such as organic chemistry. Even though I am terrified to take this course next year, I do know that I need to step outside of my comfort zone to strive for the best and achieve high academic enrichment.

O: Original Inquiry

Being apart of the Biological Sciences Scholars Program, I have been given the opportunity to engage in many different research visits of the many researches on campus. One particular visit was to Dr. Mark Merrick’s research lab. There he was conducting research that could potentially affect health and rehabilitation sciences and focused on injury pathophysiology and therapeutic modalities. At this visit, he showed us a more improved technique he was developing that would better heal cramps that athletes might experience during their games.

At this visit, I realized how important conducting research was and how much I wanted to be involve in something like this. Although I am still a freshman and have yet to engage in a research project, I do help that as my years at this university continue, that I will be able to participate in something that could potentially help improve modern medicine

G: Global Awareness

The G in G.O.A.L.S. stands for global awareness. The G to me, means to the idea and appreciation of all individuals from the many diverse backgrounds that our university has to offer and the ability to appreciate all of the different beliefs and cultures in the world. Even though this is still my first year at The Ohio State University, I have been able to gain a better understanding of cultures because of this large university. Coming from New York City, one of the largest melting pots in this country, I thought that I had a great understand in the various backgrounds that people can come from. However, being in a large university as this one, my awareness of the complexity of our world grew.

One my floor in my dorm, there is no one prominent religion or race. Everyone is as diverse as I hoped for. Even with this large diversity, we are all able to get along extremely well and have developed a great friendship that I hope will last for a long time.

Semester in Review: Autumn 2015

Over the past four months here at The Ohio State University, I feel that I have grown as a person, both academically and socially. College classes are extremely more rigorous compared to high school classes, a reality that I certainly was not prepared for. However, I did learn to adapt to the changes; I set a strict studying schedule that I kept to, and kept up with all of my various assignments. I also realized that if I was struggling with an issue in class, that the best way to fix the situation was to immediately go for help instead of trying to figure it out myself.

Socially, I also grew as an individual; I became more  outgoing and began to speak up for myself. Instead of just sitting in my room all day, I hung out with those living in my dorm and tried to develop at least one friend in each of my classes.

Overall, this first semester of my college experience at The Ohio State University, turned out extremely well and I can not wait to see what will come in the future.

Artifact #1

When I joined the lacrosse team my sophomore year of high school, never did I think that playing a sport that would demand so much of my time, would change me into an extremely dedicated and hardworking person. My senior year of lacrosse bought a lot of changes for my team; we had a new coach who had never coached a lacrosse team before, and at least 10 new players joining.

Although it was a very rough season, having to prove to my new couch that I did deserve a starting role and the constant need to having to fundraise because we did not have enough money for transportation to our various games, it showed me that persistence is key.

In our final game of the post season, I scored my first goal of the season, unaware that that goal would be the start to help us attempt a comeback in a game that seemed over after the first quarter. Even though we did loose that game, the way my team rallied together and kept our heads up even though we lost, proved that life wasn’t just about winning and losing, but about trying your best even when things get rough.

If I had never joined lacrosse my sophomore year, or even if I had decided to quit the team my season year, then I would have never learned that even when things get tough, there’s always going to be a light at the end of the tunnel.
